early game hunger and thirst
It doesn't feel balanced to me.

I'm playing a solo campaign on hard, and it feels like everything I need to do has to happen between constantly eating and drinking.

Thinking about it, I can understand the rate of thirst, but the hunger aspect is a real pain in the ass (the whole "survive 2 days without water vs 20 days without food thing). The entire game just feels like how much can I get done before I need to eat again, which in turn I need to account for actually procuring food into my schedule to plan for starvation.

It feels like a layer of artificial difficulty in the game to induce unnecessary stress.

Looking back on my survival games experience usually every survival game is like that. Maybe survival games aren't for you?

Yeah i think early game is meant for 'stressing you out' when the late game is a bit more relaxed.

Yeh.. you need to get the little stove and a fishing rod up and working asap.. as well as a distiller and plastic cup. Or get lucky with melons n pineapples on islands.

The basic rate of food/water is a game killer for me, you spend so much time just doing those two basics it just becomes too much after a few hours.

Not really play some survival games the early game is always about dealing with food and hunger constantly. Games like Don't Starve have the same mechanics early game until you set things up so you aren't constantly working on food and water. If you aren't enjoying a genres base mechanics I wouldn't say that's an insane logicial conclusion to come to that possibly the genre isn't for you.

What about games where the rate of decay isn't less than five minutes, but they make the effort to acquire the resources the challenging aspect like The Long Dark? Or games where they have multiple systems to balance so it integrates variety in the gameplay loop without it becoming tedious, like Project Zomboid? Or what about games where the survival mechanisms are secondary to the primary gameplay like Fallout 4 or TESV?

I have a concern about 1 aspect of the mechanics in a game that is still in early access and you're literally trying to tell me the entire genre isn't for me?

That is some insane, next level gatekeeping and leap in logic.

I am loving this game but I agree 100% on the rate of thirst and hunger, it's insane! I really wanted to jump to Hardest difficulty but I refuse just because the constant thirst and hunger is already bad enough in just normal mode. It really needs to be tweaked some so I don't have to eat as much as a 500 pound person per in game day to just survive. 3 watermelons, 3 drumsticks and 4 fish and a whole bottle of water every like 15 mins is just waaay overboard.
