Only large islands?
So I recently got to the large islands...

Drifted (don't use the sail in open water) into 4-5 large islands but have not seen any small islands since.

Do the small islands still spawn?

Was under the impression you mostly still drifted into small islands and had to use the sail and radar to get to the large islands.

I guess this stems from running low on metal, the big islands I can find a few pieces of copper but the large size, spread out water areas makes diving somewhat frustrating.

Is there any decent amount of metal ore on the large islands?

I have noticed that there seem to be fewer small islands since the new large islands were introduced, but they're still there. You'll often find a small island very close to a large one - just climb to the highest point and you'll see where it is.

I have found loads of metal/copper near large islands - you just have to swim out a little, to where the shelf suddenly plunges downwards - you will need an air tank as it's often a bit further down.

I think the floating debri is a clue to the location of goodies like metal ore etc.

Floating debris always spawn in the direction you choose to drive and the width of those debri is around 27 tile.

Each small island give around 20 iron ( and 30 from time to time ) but you may dive deep and use flippers and air tank to collect those iron as fast you can those 3 minute you got after you have kill the shark.

Since the latest update, islands are spread out a lot more...so sometimes they'll spawn outside of visual range. And most of the time, it's much more efficient to dive for metal on small islands. Large islands have copious amounts of seaweed and scrap metal however.

The oily floating debris piles are indicative of a crate down below. All of them but one (for whatever reason) have a crate underneath, not necessarily directly below but pretty close.

I have not been on those big island yet because. 1 of the reason is : i wanna collect crazy much iron and armour up my huge raft and build one big building on one part of the raft and this way i get space to storage all my item / chest and then i free up a lot of tile and by that i can start to collect some animal.

The other reason is : After collecting more than 1000 iron i know how to clean those small island pretty fast for iron - clay - scrap and seaweed ( well i also save my iron spear as much i can at this stage ) and then i am thinking : what gonna happen when i turn on the antenna and start to track those big island - do i gonna hit those big island all the time and only those small island from time to time - or can i choose to avoid those big island and track those small island again .

So that is the reason why i have not turn on my antenna yet , i am afraid to lose all those fast island search and all those abandoned raft who pop up all the time.

You don't "lose" small islands. The large ones just get added to the mix.

And how do it work when you turn of your antenna ?
nasojjr Sep 14, 2019 @ 1:27am
Once you've uncovered large islands, they will show up without tracking them. Or, you can track them specifically if you choose.

It seems to be split even if you'll encounter a small island or a large one. I for one think there are too many large islands in the mix, and unfortunately they (large islands) seem to yield less metal then small islands.

Large islands yield more metal in general(there is one exception for a small islands with tons of metal and i think that is the small island that is sticking just with rocks above the water), its just that its spread more. As an advice i can give the example of the big islands with the "garden" on the cliff plateau. If you go in the water on the "back" side of the island(i call the back side the place where there are 2 "ramps" that lead to the top of the plateau) there is a green goo(3 plastics +1 wood captured in it) that has 20+ metal ore, 15+ copper, 7-8 scraps and 2 chests underwater.

Each big islands has its own configuration of resources you can find on it(same for small islands), but the general rule is that there a lot more resources compared to smaller islands.

I've pulled on average 30-40 metal ore from most small islands, compared to large islands its far more time efficient as well.

Some small islands are duds tho and hardly have anything.

Seems most large islands have vast swathes of undeveloped areas underwater near the beaches where they really ought to have something. I'd rather stay focused on the small ones where its much more tightly compacted. Also don't have to deal with the annoying screechers.
