Stranded in the ocean when on island?

My first attempts at playing this morning, upon arriving to the first island, I hop on it, start collecting things, exploring etc.
Two times in a row now, I suddenly appear in the middle of the ocean with nothing around me (the shark has not appeared either as far as I can tell), there is also no floating materials, nothing but water and sky. Has anyone else experienced this?
I just seem to go from being on land, to being in the middle of the ocean with nothing and it is absolutely game-breaking.

Did you anchor your raft? World only exist certain radius around your raft. If raft moves far enough away from things, they will despawn, including but not limited to island you might be standing on and as island no longer exists you'll end in water. To prevent this, always anchor your raft in place when leaving your raft for any reason.

I also had this happen and wondered why. The first thing that happens when you make a world is land on an island, you hop off your raft instantly leaves and your game is just a time bomb, as there is no way to get back to your raft, we assumed you could build another raft but apparently the raft is god.

It happens when you're raft is destroyed by the shark, which happen if you're not on it

If you drown your character you should respawn on your raft if it still exists (ie. Bruce has not eaten it). And no, you can't make new raft, only expand the one you start with. If your starting raft is destroyed, it's game over and you have to start a new game.

Unless this is in hard mode, if you're on island, shark doesn't attack raft.. seagulls do however attack crops

When your raft leaves without you, you have 4 min 21 secondes before the world despawns.
If you no longer see your raft and the wolrd has not despawned yet, you can make it back to your raft, by swimming in the direction of the current.

Always anchor your raft because it will leave you behind. Save and reload, you'll get back on it with all your stuff, I don't know if this works in Hard mode though.
