What is the goal?

Is the goal to make it back to land? Are there point objectives? stay alive for X number of days?

To find a radio tower with an explanation of what happened in it. The game has achievements you can accomplish one of which is to stay alive for 365 days.

At this point it is a very short game, it almost feels like a playable game teaser. Fun and relaxing for those that like to hunt for items with limited building options.

just build a nice raft, survive and then explore. That is what it is to me.
There was a book called "zen and the art of motor cycle maintenance" which is about, - rather than just getting to an end, - enjoy the journey.

When you get to the building in the ocean and get to the top floor there are photos of a huge structure arising from the ocean so maybe in time we will get to that.

There doesn't have to be a point to survival games, other than to have fun. The end goal should be what you make of it. Take Ark Survival Evolved; there is no real point to doing anything. However, this "journey" should be full of stuff to do and goals to meet. I'm not seeing a lot of that in this game. There just isn't all that much to do.
