I built the Smelter... but i have no idea how to use it.

No menu comes up for it. is there a guide somewhere or a recipe

put planks in it then click on it with metal ore or something in your hand

You use it to turn metal ore and copper ore into ingots, seaweed into wine goo and sand into glass.

After visiting enough islands you'll have more than enough metal ore to do whatever you wish. Also after you've visited each island over and over again you start to remember if that island has what you need under the water.

Kill shark (or play peaceful game as I do) then just dive down and circle the island, metal ore is abundant on many islands. Copper ore too but I don't stock as much of it as it's limited in what it can be used for.

If you play with mods you can find one that tells you how much of resources are around you, so dive down on island, turn on mod and see how many metal ores are left to be found.
