Raft - Kid Friendly?
Hey Everyone.....My 10 year old child wants to get this game.....Im a fairly concervative parent - and while the jist of the game seems fairly clean, is it kid appropriate, and will a 10 year old be able to understand how to play and succeed at this game?

Thanks!
Mark.

no probkem with your kid Mark, he has nice tastes, ask him why he likes Raft?

The only thing in the game that might bother your kid is the shark biting the raft the first time, besides that its pretty simple and there is nothing too complex. Gather up junk, make water purfiers, a grill to cook some fish or beets you get out of barrels and then build your raft up. You can also play in Creative to not have to deal with the shark and there are varying difficulties in survival from easy to hard. Hopefully you don't need to but there is steam refunds if you find it inappropriate for him, less than two hours of play time and steam will usually refund you. There is multiplayer too if you want to join him for the first little bit.

Raft is a nice game but it sort of depends on your kid. Back when my youngest kid was 10, he pulled me into gaming to help understand a few things. Maybe that would work for you? Play together for a bit. IMO time spent doing anything (non-distructive) with a kid is time well spent.

Be warned though. Soon as he caught on to each game he tended to go his own way and avoided telling other players he was my son. LOL, now at 17 he is like Nightrdr who?

Definitely. There isn't any nudity, sex, or gore, and the only violence is when the shark hits you (and you get a few red splotches on the screen.)

This is probably good for ages 6 and up, maybe younger with someone helping out on the controls.

And the gameplay isn't complicated, so I think even the young kids would pick it up quickly.

About the only thing I can see scaring them the most is maybe the shark coming out of the deep blue and trying to bite them while in the water. That can scare even some adults.

Other than that, it seems fairly tame, and is less violent than Minecraft; and that game is supposed to be friendly to kids.

As for a 10-year old understanding it, I'm not sure. If they understand first person shooter controls, I guess so?

Just a heads up here for MarkTheSark, as others have said, the game is basically family clean and tame, however, understand that the player is in conflict with most of the "wildlife" in this game. It is, after all, a survival game, and you will be killing sharks, fish, seagulls, and vultures and possibily other creatures as the game gets developed further!

I mention this because there are people who will find this "hunting/mild violence" offensive and/or prevent their children from having these kind of life experiences in real life, play, or discussions. Also, if your child is easily frightened by, say, scary movies, he is probably going to be terrified by his interaction with the shark in this game ( think in terms of the "JAWS" movies) as the shark is your main protagonist in this game and he is out to intentionally destroy your raft and posessions and end your life when you enter the water.

So if you and/or your child have no problems with the items put forth in paragraph two, then, dive in (pun intended) and enjoy a clean, but sometimes slightly stressful game! :steamhappy:

Thanks everyone for the super helpful advice.....

It's not rated by ESRB, I wasn't sure where they guidelines/parameters lied.

For Parents, games that are "kid friendly" is a wholly ambigious term, and there are huge grey parameters, only because Parents comfort levels to what their kids are exposed to is widely variant - dependant on where their conviction levels are.

I really appreciate everyone's absolutely fantastic feedback.

Mark.

you should show him roblox too, another great game for children, also very christian and extremely conservative in regards to said themes above.

i see no problem with your kid laying this. the only issue i can possibly imagine is him being scared of the shark. apart from that i don't see anything that would be an issue.

As you can see, some people here are concerned about the influence the shark might have on kids, maybe you could consider this in the next update? I know, that you already have balanced the spawning rate of the shark, but maybe you should add a mode, without sharks or enemies in general, some kind of peaceful mode maybe, similar to the one in Minecraft. I know that many people are annyoed by the shark spawns and just want to survive against the elements and just want to build.
Anyway, you did an amazing job with this game so far and I am confident, that you will deliver on upcoming features with the same quality.

We are definitely considering a peaceful mode where you don't have to deal with threats :)
