Also, where were you guys at when this happened? Were you anchored down somewhere, or adrift on the water?
If you died under the water, you might not float back up, making it harder to find you from the surface.
First off, if your friend hasn't done so already, stop the raft. Either by anchoring it or turning the sail against the wind.
If he can't notice you right away from where he is at, backtracking might be in order. This means either he has to swim back and find you, or could paddle back (assuming the sail is against the wind to keep from drifting away).
When found, he'll have to jump in and pull you back onto the raft and on to a bed.
I assume you are playing in Hard mode, since respawing back onto the raft would otherwise be an option.
And no, unfortunately the game doesn't move you if you reload. I tried that after I got killed in a stupid way and lost the resources and tools I had.
