I just turn the sail hard left or hard right until the target is dead ahead then i just close up the sail and drift towards my target.

Well I copied and pasted that page but it doesn't work, sorry. Really, now I am looking for the page again.
{Having found the page in Guides called Hidden Function of Stars, I have tested this and that nav technique is rubbish. ALL the stars rise and set just like the moon does. There is no quick and dirty way to use them as markers for Islands. When comparing their technique to the large Islands I see on my receiver there is never a match on my screen for a Large Island and some Star or other.}
Celestial Nav. Dayam that will be useful.
Okay using sails. RAFT wind always comes out of the WEST. That means you can make sail and sail North South and EAST ONLY.
East and West can be seen at sunrise/moonrise and settin. Rising in the East Setting in the WEST. Once you do that, and you have your receiver set up it becomes a thought exercise to read your screen for North, South, East and West.
The Sails do not work like real sails so you cannot "set the sails" to angle slightly into the wind and at least PARTIALLY sail in a slightly Westward Direction. This is sad as even the MAYFLOWER could sail a few points into the Wind. Too bad.
The big issue? Challenge? Has been to figure out how to get to Balboa without an engine. It can be done, and is a fun challenge.
So you can sail North or South and East. You can use your streamer to tell you which direction. The streamer does not indicate wind. It indicates your direction of drift if unaided. No matter. If your stream is pointing either to the direct left or direct right you will be going North or South. If your receiver is set up correctly on your raft the top of the scope is the front end of your raft.
With that information you can then call up Balboa on the screen. It will ALWAYS spawn to your West. However if you angle ever so slightly westward you and use your paddle to get into a position where Balboa is the EAST of the North South Line on your receiver screen. When that happens you Can then sail to Balboa, making sure you never let yourself drift off to the EAST of Balboa again.
It is a real challenge, It took hours to figure it out. Last night I did it.
In terms of paddle work. It took me two paddle to get myself on a North / South Line running to the WEST of Balboa. It took me two more paddles once I got there to get to a place where it was nifty for me to drop anchor. (That was at the little inlet)
It can be done. Balboa can be reached by sail, with the help of four paddles, maybe less.
i could "sail" to within easy view of it but NOT quite all the way.
you CAN get there with sail alone and LESS than 2 paddles.
the *normal* occurence of Balboa Island is *against* the stream/wind (that blows, as stated before, always in the same direction (part of the game mechanics))!
That's why you find the blueprints for an engine as well as a steering wheel at the Vasagatan location, so that you can comfortably cruise against the stream... ^^
As for the TO; this almost always occurs, if you use the sail and not drift 'with' the stream.
Like niemandel wrote: drift with the stream, turn on your radar for a second once in a while (saves battery charge). When a story location (or any other large island you want to visit) appears in your forward section, sail port or starboard (left/right) to get the island 'in front of you' on the radar screen, while checking (turning on) the location on the radar from time to time (again: saves battery charge),
then drift/sail (with the stream/wind) directly towards it.
