Because it's 64-bit program.

that should definitely be mentioned as a requirement on the store page then

While I think that yes it should be listed in the store page I also keep asking myself why people still run 32 bit systems. Heck why does Microsoft keep flipping making 32 but only operating systems!? No bueno.

It is so all the OEMs can still sell "Budget PCs". But no one wants a budget PC unless they are truly on a budget, so people opt-in for the upgrades. Bam! Automatic up-sell without even trying. OEMs sell the 64 bit upgrade for anywhere between 50 and 100 bucks and doubling the ram is an easy $200+. That is why I build my own.

When Kerbal Space Program was 32bit only, we used the x64 Unityplayer to execute as x64 to unlock >3GB of RAM for loading up mods. There was not a perceptible benefit other than that.. Game didn't really run any faster and the stock game ran good

with some work, i can almost get it to run with the 32bit Unity player :)
I get to the title screen before it crashes: https://imgur.com/a/nvhXMsN

think I'd have to do some kind of mod to change calls to SymGetSymFromAddr64

Thats exactly the problem. 32 bit applications have a 4GB maximum address space (think, 2^32 bytes = 4GB), and generally around 3GB are only addressable. No excuse for a 32bit app or machine in 2018.

Most systems should be compatible enough to upgrade to 64-bit though.

I don't see a problem? They recommend 4GB RAM on the store page (ie: 4GB installed and ~3 available). This game doesn't take up anywhere near that. It is roughtly ~700MB total and your game state doesn't take up 2.5GB...

this game could totally be 32bit no prob..

You say that, but 64x allows a lot more options with the CPU as well as boosting the total allowable RAM. Frankly, it's just not that simple. They would have to rebuild a few things and repackage it all for a compatibility that Microsoft themselves will no longer support soon.

You are thinking an EA game with just a shark, a couple of seaguls and the occasional island. After they start adding more content, which I believe is part of the plan, those resource numbers are going to start climbing. I saw the same thing in Ark. when it was new and only had a few dinos, it did not use a lot of resources either. Now, it is one of the most resource demanding games on Steam and is still growing.
