For islands, you should build a sail so you can maneuver around to a good spot and also build a couple raised platforms or stairs to get up onto them. Haven't had a shark attack my anchor, I'll have to keep that in mind. But as far as islands go, I haven't found any worth going to early in the game as I've only found flowers for paint and trees which you need an axe to cut down. Just bust your butt collecting debris when you find it until you've got a steady system going and you'll be fine. Then you can focus on islands and everything.
Just found out that there is a wrong direction to travel...apparently you need to build a streamer and follow that. As soon as I changed my direction, I started seeing debris again. You might try that.
As for OP, relying on debris for scrap doesn't cut it. Take that hook of yours and dive at the base of islands, break apart underwater junk with the hook for scrap.
You will not be able to unlock much more witho it diving.
As for sailing, the streamer helps but is just another tool. If you are trying to sail into the wind, your craft will hardly move (if at all) - that is a good time to get a paddle. You can actually paddle upwind/sideways if you missed an abandoned raft or island. With practice you will be able to "pin" your raft to the island using the wind/sail.
Later on, you can use the above process to get an island to help you turn (spin) your raft to face "forward". Not required except for those of us with CDO.
Already playing on that mode, but the paddle i was unaware of what it's good for.
Eh? i've had 3 miserable attemps to get stuff from islands and twice almost lost the raft.
If you loose the raft, it's basically game over. had it happen on my previous save...
I haven't seen any more islands in a long time, except for one spawning so far away sideways that i couldn't reach it in time using my sail
All in all, might be necessary to start over, again :P
