Dedicated server or player hosted only?
I prefer there be a dedicated server option, for performance reasons. Obviousy player hosted is also nice, but dedi lets me run a 24/7 server through a hosting service.

From the FAQ:

“Will I have to rent or run a server to play with my friends?”

No, there will be no need for a separate server. The player who starts the game will automatically act as server, and then your friends can connect to you. We are aiming for simplicity and we are trying to make sure no hassle will be required in order to allow everyone to easily play with friends.

So main focus in multiplayer is to allow players to act as servers. Do also bear in mind that the multiplayer CO-OP PVE only.

Which doesnt realyl answer the question. Will there be a dedicated server OPTION? Or will it be player hosted ONLY? Player hosted only will suck as the host will require a much higher end system to both host and play, which reduces the number of potential games adn people on midrange systems or potatoes will not be able to host.

Hello!
We do realise that a dedicated server does require more from your system but right now a player hosted solution is what we have available. Maybe further into the future we could solve a dedicated solution but we will not be able to support that right now because the game is built around our current solution and would require a lot of rework.

Umm, you have that backwards. A player hosted solution places a far greater load on system resources than a dedicated server solution.

Unfortunately, if there is no dedicated server solution then players will not be able to contract with server hosting companies. Thank you for your response, but I will have to pass entirely on this game.

You can't always get what you want.

An advantage of a 'dedicated server' would be that guest(s) can play though the hosting person is offline.
A technical implementation could use a 'headless' game (which perhaps even requires an own steam account) that doesn't have resource-eating any GUI. Internally it still could require a 'dummy' player who's status is 'died, laying on the see ground).

this is the only issue i have seen wit hte game, i currently have a constant 15 players inb my world but when i got to bed i have to leave the game up and running so everyone can continue to play. that prblem with te way it works is it relays way to much on a single person. i get the idea but real servers are gonna be a nexxitity in the future

Peer to peer also suffers from the asymetric bandwdith issue. Putting 10-15 connections across a consumer internet connection is just begging for lag.

Australia has horrible internet, more than 2 people and we're at 500+ ping, timing out and the game is totally unplayable. Dedicated servers are definitely needed, simplicity is good but just allow both options, players who don't understand how to run a server can host it off their machine like the current implementation. Hopefully when we get NBN I can play with more than two people :P

Most games provide both, since the code is basically the same. This is the only game in this genre that I know of that doesnt have dedicated server support.

Server/headless host is a necessity for games like this. Srsly guys you're dropping the ball hard here.

And what happens when there are no players on? The raft gets chewed apart by the shark, so that when people do hop on, everything's gone.

The game can be in a paused state until someone is on?

It's too bad about the dedicated server response. The developers should take a look at some of the most success full survival games out there like ARK and Conan and others, which allow an anonymous log in server fill set up. If it is linked to Steam accounts then itis difficult to run a separate server machine and a client on a separate machine (unless you have two accounts). Also, the server side machine can be left on indefinitely while the ower is away from the machine. It also allows for third-party hosting. Thus more opportunity for more players means more sales. Just my opinion it's your call.

Simple be like Farm Simulator where you can have it pause when no players are on the game. It is simple.
