It should have the ability to create fertile plots on the island and plant food, on some larger islands it should have a fresh water spring or water fall so that if you so please you can stay forever if you don't care to follow any story they develop.
But they would have to make items respawn so that trees regrow as well as flowers and other resources.
The first islands the developers created are stupid at best, but now we have islands that we can get on without the need to create stupid tall floors or roof pieces to get on. Honestly, it's not worth the effort to create platforms to get to a chest when I can just come across them on the ocean rafts. Some of the new islands however that allow you to jump on them and jump/walk to the top are brilliant. There is not a lot up top so a minimal pathway to get there is good, why have to build all these roof planes to get there just to get may some wood plastic, hinge, etc when you can simply sail along and find a raft to provide the same.
I mean you wouldn't want to settle on the first large island you came across, you'd likely want to build up your raft to whatever you want it to be then dock it to an island as long as you have enough resources for any building you want to do otherwise...
Food can be fish or farming which renew and area always available,
Trees can be grown on the raft
Clay isn't "required" to survive, just makes eating happen less often.
Rocks are useless right now beyond that throw away anchor
Pretty much everything is not needed to just survive on an island but if you wanted to build some crazy fort then you may have to do a lot of tree growing on your raft.
But it still comes down to having the developers allow us to build on islands for those people that just want to hang out and realize that if they raft away they lose whatever is on the island when it's out of site.
