Leaving your sail open will actually move you out of the debris field if you aren't sailing in the right direction (use the streamer to keep an eye on wind direction).
Just close your sail and wait a few minutes. A new debris field will soon appear.
I don't think that's true.. In fact that's the bane of survival games like this -- all the challange you'll ever find is present on day 1.. while your gear progresses, the challange does not.
