Is there an ending?
Can you "win" and then restart on a higher difficulty?

No. There is a destination to reach to find some lore but there is more coming as this is Early Access. It is not a finished game yet.

It is a endless game.

Thanks!
I'll pass, then. There are enough endless games out there. Hoped for something like FTL where you could replay the game under other circumstances and/or other settings

It would be great if the game told a story, even a somewhat generic one. (Such as the long dark) but mostly just an actual way to be rescued.
Even being beamed up to a space ship to join the rest of your human family. At the same time though, endings are for stories, and a game is not a story unless it wants to be.

There may be one latter but its EA so as of yet no ending.

Nah, endings are not only reserved for stories. Chess has an ending. FTL has an ending. Most roguelikes have one, in fact. An ending can act as a serious motivation to replay a game you have beaten in a lower difficulty instead of just restarting an endless game. That's what I had in mind as I started this thread.

So is the ending the place the radar takes you too :)

It depends on what the Dev team have in mind.
Right now, with how limited thing are, ending or not, there isn't much replay value... yet.

Much of what makes the listed games you gave as an example have so much replay value is the fact you can't explore most of the aspects of it in one or two play throughs; and jumping in again to either find out new areas or improve your skill is what makes most people dive back in.

Right now (day before the Monday update) one can play the game on Normal difficulty, 'beat it' in 6-18 hours of gameplay, and that's it.

I know what to expect when starting off, I know what best to do when making a raft, I know how to handle the shark, and I did all that with one casual play through (and not dying once).

What makes FTL, or Chess, or even a pure narrative game like The Stanley Parable, have so much replay value is the constant amount of work, play testing, and gradual development to build up something awesome.

We are the play testers of this game as well as the people funding the Dev team. We are a key part of the game's development, and we have a say in how things go. If having an end to the game that leaves people wanting to jump back in is something you and many others want, that is something the Dev team will likely aim for.

Build a receiver !
For thoses that have buy the game Raft. When you can built the receiver 3 battery and 3 antenna and you have to place the 3 antenna on your raft away an off from the receiver cause if they are to close they dont work. And then follow the signal you have to let the receiver open all the time in other to adjust your corse. and you have to change the battery a couple of time but when you gonna rich the dot you will not gonna be desapointed. WOW ! I let you have the surprise.....Have fun ! :steamhappy::steammocking::steamhappy:

Story would be nice - with the ability to keep playing after 'the end', should you choose to do so. Just because it can be fun for some. :steamhappy:

I don't care too much about story in games like this, but the lack of purpose really bothers me. Endless games are the first ones to get boring.

Yes, that's absolutely right. :) And what Zormac and Lil One said. Purpose writes its own story. I hope for a co op game which is like FTL where you can never see everything in the first playthrough AND you have to adapt and improvise around the things you find. If you can build anything it anytime there's just not enough challenge to keep me motivated.

a multiplayer roguelike would really sound interesting, and i've played spelunky with a few friends before using parsec, which was really fun :D
i suppose you already played "into the breach"? would be right up your alley i believe.
Mysh Jun 11, 2018 @ 5:38am
No, but ITB is on my to do list. Right now I'm trying to find a game I can play with the Misses and/or some of my friends. Maybe something with building and survival but where there's an actual threat or something else to overcome. Not just dumb waves of zombies like in 7dtd or similar games. And nothing endless - there's too much "endless" (also known as "generic") stuff out there. :-/
gabgab01 Jun 11, 2018 @ 5:41am
hm.
technically, ARK has an ending, but it's quite hard to reach and takes a long time, especially on official servers.

what you are asking for is a survival sandbox game with an achievable goal.
sadly, since the nature of such sandbox survival games is the base-building part, and people tend to get attached to their bases emotionally, the possibility of losing it all by completing the game might prevent people from even playingthe game.

but that's just how developers see this.
Mysh Jun 11, 2018 @ 5:47am
I don't want to offend anybody but I think ARK is a mediocre game. Performance and especially AI are badly done and the rest is just a giant grind. I've played it for a while ... also the DLC before release and then just renaming a beta version to "final" ... I don't want to support that.

I'm quite sure one of the next big things will be something in the direction you mention :) Dark Souls shouldn't have been succesful if you follow the "people won't play if they might lose everything" argument. I think it can be done - just let them carry over stuff to the next game and make base building enjoyable and not tedious like in ARK. Subnautica would be a nice example of how to do base building in such a game. Focus the game more on the stragetic and tactical side than on the building and your sales should be fine. Like for example a Starship Troopers setting. Survive for 30 days until the rescue craft arrives. Would be epic ... and also a big cash grab for DLCs with new enemies etc., so your income is secured as a dev.
