Raft

How do you start a new raft after losing your old one?
I have started two new games and both have ended the same way. I start on the raft, find an island, go on to the island to explore, my raft disappears and then I am stuck on the island. I cannot seem to build foundations in the water to start a new raft and my old one just completely disappears, even though I leave it wedged against the side of the island.

Am I do this wrong or something? Please help.

If you have a bed (or maybe not), when you "surrender and die" you will respawn on the raft. If your raft is stuck against the island, you can paddle it free or direct it away with a sail.

Yeah, but what if the shark destroys part of your raft, knocks you off and you can't find it?

Yes, he can, and will try to. This is why it's important to do three things:
1. make your raft bigger, keeping in mind that the shark will always go after the most accessible tile. He will start at the outer edge and work his way in, if he cannot bite anything there due to armor. More on that below.
2. Make a stronger weapon to fend him off/kill him easier. With the steel spear, it only takes one hit to "convince" him to let go and only a few rounds of this to turn him into food.
3. Armor up! When you're able to, craft armor for your raft. It's recommended you first armor up any tiles with equipment on them to avoid losing the equipment. Once that's done, work your way from the center of the raft outward. The shark WILL attack unarmored tiles even if they are in the middle of the raft. Again, he goes for the most easily accessible, starting from the edge and working inwards towards the center.

This is so dumb, in the early game you have to lodge your raft into the side of an island with the sails and hope it doesn't free itself. There's no reason a hammer that can make more raft foundations couldn't make one without a raft present.

You build an anchor and anchor your raft, no wedging needed. The reason you can't make a new raft is because the game isn't programmed to make a new raft. The whole game world is centered on the raft, in fact it is centered on the original four raft pieces and if you build exclusively in one direction and get too far from that original center you will no longer see floating junk in the water.

Islands are useless early game anyway. You should be able to get fresh water and cook food, and have storage space before ever landing on an island.

No you dont. You get rocks from the barrels and it only takes 4 rocks to make a one time use anchor.
