Large Islands
Found one without using the radar, today. Was looking for the secret islands
Is this normal, that after finding a few large islands, you can stumble upon them without ever switching the radar on?

Also due to the mist it's now quite hard to see islands you're passing from the other side of the raft, draw distance seems quite low, even on extreme

Using radar you can find the large islands only not the "secret islands" aka boat islands and plane island. Mist is annoying but its a whether effect its on only sometimes. Too often from my taste tbh.

Agree on mist, but the large islands I've been finding have been without turning the radar on and I was wondering if that's working correctly

Doubt really need radar to see large islands,
after the first discovery of the Utopia board wreckage.
Just need some luck and eyes to see occasional graphical gltiched silhouette/outline in the distance, even if drifting blindly.

Ever since the last few updates,
an increase of number of islands and closer in proximity density, and
even shown as two blips can now appear on radar.

When the mist appeared, while searching the 'captain island'
been carrying a binocular to have a better look.

You can stumble onto them as with other islands. Turning radar on give you precise location that you can sail towards. In my experience with sailing in straight line and without radar you will find between 1/2 and 2/3 of the big islands that will appear.

Binoculars don't extend the visible distance; they don't make islands any easier than panning the camera and using the increased clarity in the peripherals

exists a mod "no fog", which disable fog and able to highly increase view distance, up to x10

Achievements can't be completed with mods so that'd be pointless, sorry

Of course the game doesn't disable achievements if you use mods. For that, the game would need to *know* about mods, and it doesn't.

Honestly, I don't know why you would think that. I use many mods, and I get achievements without any problems.

You don't need the receiver to find large islands. They will spawn in just as small ones, only larger. You can find them even on day one now, since they changed how that worked some time back. It used to be that we would only find large islands after we built the receiver. You need that to enter codes and find story locations.

I've also found the plane/shipwreck often the first days, just drifting. Typically before I have a sail. Also some times when I don't even have materials to make paddles or anchors. I've had to sail past one of the special islands on more than one occasion, because I couldn't safely land on it.

It was true when the comment was made, you're necro'ing a thread from 3 years ago. The devs changed it later.

Locking the thread as it contains outdated information (it is 4 years old thread after all) and can confuse people reading it.

Kathykins reply above is how things currently work.
