Raft
Shark Bait
Has something changed recently with the shark bait? The sharks seem less and less interested in the shark bait. I recently tossed out shark bait first thing in the morning and after 2 in game days, the shark had not touched it. The shark swam near it several times, but just ignored it.

I quit playing because of the shark. I'm all for having an enemy, but the shark makes the game frustrating. You have to fish 2-3 days, sometimes, just to get the right fish for shark bait. The shark sometimes takes forever to attack the bait and the bait doesn't seem to last long enough.

If you happen to kill the shark, a new shark appears too quickly and your back to wasting all of your time trying to get the right fish for more shark bait.

I do agree that dealing with the shark can get tiresome. There needs to be a mid-game solution that maybe not permanently, but something that gives you more dive time than the current setup. I've used shark bait a few times, but I've never really understood the point of it.

One sort of solution might be to make shark bait the primary target so you could maybe kill the shark, throw some bait in the water, and double your dive time. Have some sort of way to limit your bait to one in the water at a time so you can't just throw out 5 of them.

But I still want some sort of iron trap or cage or something that disables the shark for longer.

Theres a mod you can disable the shark attacking you or/and the raft.

I just bought the game after debating it for awhile.

Played it with a friend which was more fun than solo.
And I agree that the shark bait seems useless. It doesn't seem to work as it should.

Also, the shark is a pain, that verges on utterly frustrating rather than something that's enjoyable to deal with. Talking early game here, with new people playing it, i.e myself and my friend.

The starter spear is too expensive resource wise, and I don't get why they need rope, should just be planks. The starter spear also breaks far too easily. I get it's just a sharpened stick, but still.

Also I've noticed the shark bugs out a lot when attacking the raft, to the point where it attacks a middle tile foundation and glitches through the raft while it's attacking, I've not been able to spear it when this happens. Walls should be able to stop it biting your raft too, as it stands now if you have a corner and wall it, it can bite the corner and destroy it and the walls and whatever you had in that corner. Biting foundation pieces is fine, but it shouldn't be able to bite through walls if they're there.

This thing isn't jaws.

Absolutely agree with this. The shark is an uninspired and boring opponent -- hard to kill, tedious to evade, unrewarding to fight, and omnipresent. There's no satisfaction from killing it, no benefit to fighting it, it's just a nuisance to be fended off for a few minutes.

Playing on peaceful is almost exactly the same experience as playing on normal, just without the harassment.

Actually the shark is pretty easy to kill. If you are underwater just wait for it to open his mouth when he charges you and then poke him with the spear in that moment. That way you hit him and he does not, granted it takes time to master + you will miss shots here and there. Shark is a nuisance definitely but once you get the hang of it its not a problem - very similar to the screacher. I hated the screacher initially but now its more or less a bunch of feathers and drumsticks to me :D

In personal experience this is how i deal with the shark:
- during sailing i pretty much ignore the shark because i have almost all my base tiles(with the exception of 2) fortified. I left 2 as a precaution to not bug him somehow.
- during small island raiding i chug a shark bait, wait for the shark to go for it(if he is reluctant to go for the bait i jump in the water close to the bait, it seems to reset his targetting)
-during large island raids - getting in the water on the other side of the island helps, baits are not very useful here unless they are thrown close to the raft. shark has pretty weird behavior around the large islands. Killing the shark during large island raids seems to be most helpful.

As a conclusion:

Get your underwater resources mostly from small island - shark is easier to manage there.
