Peaceful Mode - No Islands?

I started a game in peaceful mode with the most recent public build of the game. I played for about 5 hours and built up a pretty large raft. However, I noticed something pretty quickly. I have seen absolutely no islands, big or small, and also no abandoned rafts anywhere.

I thought it might have been the game. So I started a second game and played an hour of that one and still haven't seen any islands or rafts.

Is peaceful mode broken? Or is this normal?

Not normal obviously. It's possible that game spawns islands so far away from your rafts path that they are barely visible and easily missed but going 5 hours without having single one in visible range would be extremely bad luck. Do you have sail and have you tried moving around or have you just let your raft float along?

Not seeing big islands is normal as you need to use the receiver to find them.

I had a sail, and have moved in a diagonally left path and still found nothing. I did notice one thing, though. I saved my game and exited, and as the game exited, an island popped up in the distance for a split second before it closed. I'm guessing this might be a graphical issue. I'm also noticing my vision is not clear. I cannot see into the distance. Very often the game will create fog in the distance, making it impossible to see any islands if they're there. Again, possibly a graphical issue. I'll have to experiment with it.

Update: I finally found a raft and an island. I don't think I did anything different. I updated my graphics drivers, which were only a couple months old, so I don't think that was it. I guess I was just way off coarse.

Just very bad luck with spawns.
Also don't underestimate the fog in this game .-. i once didn't saw an island till it was right infront of my raft! xD

I just started playing an hour ago or so (peaceful). A boat came right up to my raft but I didn't know what to do. I got on it and tried to click on something on it, I think a cooler? but then it started sinking. I also saw a little raft a little ways off. Are you supposed to swim over? what?

Abandoned rafts you can find floating around will start to sink as soon as player touches them.
Yes, they have lootable box on top.

You can use paddle or sail to get to things that are not directly in your raft's path. If you have neither, you could swim to it if you estimate you can still swim back to your raft before it gets too far away. Or just ignore it as you can always find others floating around later.
