Not seeing big islands is normal as you need to use the receiver to find them.
Just very bad luck with spawns.
Also don't underestimate the fog in this game .-. i once didn't saw an island till it was right infront of my raft! xD
Abandoned rafts you can find floating around will start to sink as soon as player touches them.
Yes, they have lootable box on top.
You can use paddle or sail to get to things that are not directly in your raft's path. If you have neither, you could swim to it if you estimate you can still swim back to your raft before it gets too far away. Or just ignore it as you can always find others floating around later.
