Overworld and random encounters
I feel this is the last frontier that Irontowers games haven't reached compared to the classic Fallout games.

I am OK with some kind of map, and the characters travel by a little dot just as classic Fallout, and during the way, we can encounter random enemies or events.

This would be a way to grind for combat experience and see more of the world outside of the towns, and we get to know the world more.

The game is very intentionally designed around not having grinding

Yeah, but maybe the next game can have it.
Fallout 1+2 have grinding and it still works.

Ehh to me those were always the most boring part of the two games but that could be due to me not really enjoying the combat in Fallout 1-2

In order for something like that to work they would have to drop the learn by doing skill system in CS and the limited skillpoint system they used in Age of Decadence. It would require a completely different approach, and I'm not sure it would be a better one. Its possible it could work but I'm not convinced it would make for a better game.

I'm just looking forward to that difficulty slider, I mean I'd prefer a game with underdog difficulty except maybe 30-50% more party skill gain maybe.

While Fallout is great and all, I don't see why 25 year old game design is what studios should be aiming for. Grinding seems fundamentally against the "limited xp" design that the devs are going for. There is an entire subset of RPGs that heavily prioritizes grinding (i.e. JRPGs), maybe that is more suited for you if you like that style.

It would be just the combat skills anyhow.

Don't see how it cannot work since other CRPG have random encounters too.
all games are based on grinding repetition that is what games are, repeating the same loops over and over again - if you go non-combat then you are playing the visual novel element of the game which isn't gamey - also zug zug

Basically you ruin the entire game balance by no longer needing to spend any resources into your combat stats since you can just RNG combat you way to victory. This then puts all of those resources into the non combat stats.

CS already has the appropriate way to add extra combats to the game without skewing the balance, via challenge fights.

I have to say I would love random encounters in Colony Ship even if they were not as challenging as regular ones or as rewarding. Taking into account how much time is spent travelling between locations and how dangerous some of the ship areas are you would expect random scavs or factions to take a crack at you now and then. It would also help with the monotony of simply going from place to place during a more talking-oriented play-through.

The main problem seems that if you pull the "more content/combats" lever, you also have to pull the "add more supplies" and "alter future combat to be equally challenging" levers. I think everyone wants more content though.

It would add a random element to your RPG.

I feel that every RPG ought to have SOME random elements to keep things fresh.
Robineus Nov 28, 2023 @ 5:40pm
I mean I wouldn't be totally against the possibility of random combat missions in the form of ruins diving given to you by that idiot with a store front in the pit who gets exactly zero business in the game and probably ever for identifying rare items. But yeah there would have to be some balance to it like it costs 500 credits to get a tip, cue random map which may pay off or may not. Then it's up to you whether you want to save scum your way out of that possible bad luck scenario.

Of course you'd immediately get people complaining bitterly about the possible break in balance because they demand the game 'hold their hand' in the aspect that they cannot stop themselves form exploiting any in game feature that they discover.

I'd rather just have Colony Ship Rats spinoff game to get all my combat fun in before CS2: Proxima Must Die (Or AoD2: Let's Make Literally ANY Character BUT Militiades A Meme For Once. PLEASE!)

A sequel in Proxima would be perfect for an Overworld.

I hope they combine AoD sword and shield combat with CS's Burst/aim ranged combat.
