More important than rerolling, you can buy better gear from the stores in the Pit. A better rifle, implants, some goggles will absolutely make a difference.

Go talk to the barman at the Whiskey Jack, he'll send you to find Jed, who can be very good fighting companion after you finish his quest. Evans, the one you find at Honest Abe's can also join you very quickly.
I recommend talking your way through and fighting as a last resort. You'll soon accumulate better levels, money and gear and you can start tackling fights.
