Can't beat John Doe (I suck)
I only have the starting rifle

I picked the harder difficulty

Is it "git good"

Or "level up and come back"?

Should I re roll my character with more weapon skills?

I went with only 1 point into rifles thinking I could level it next.

It depends what your character looks like. If you're not a fighter, you can pick up companions along the way who can do the fighting in your stead.

Oh thanks... I'm gonna reroll and do pistols.

Having this 7ap rifle and only getting 1 do or die shot per turn isn't working for me Thanks

More important than rerolling, you can buy better gear from the stores in the Pit. A better rifle, implants, some goggles will absolutely make a difference.

I also kind of want a high int/diplo type main char. Is there a good fighter follower I can pick up early for encounters?

Go talk to the barman at the Whiskey Jack, he'll send you to find Jed, who can be very good fighting companion after you finish his quest. Evans, the one you find at Honest Abe's can also join you very quickly.

I recommend talking your way through and fighting as a last resort. You'll soon accumulate better levels, money and gear and you can start tackling fights.

First, get more party member (see the advice above). Second, feats make a big difference, so if your character isn't combat oriented (more of a diplomat) and the rifle skill is untagged (no instant +2 skill bonus), wait until you gain a level, pick a combat feat and then come back.

A rifleman can easily kill John Doe solo and the advantage is the higher damage and bonus to hit in aimed mode. If you post the character you want to play, we'll give you further advice.

John Doe is the easiest. I suggest you play on Hero difficulty until you get the hang of the game, because if you try to go combat focused the game gets MUCH harder.

Ok thanks!
