They don't try. I once sat there for a few minutes to test and they never attempted to escape.
So no, it is a bit of a waste of space. I really wish they would try though, it's a cool idea.
If you really want to be safe, I reccomend concrete electric for the island. Dinosaurs will go straight to your guests normally so it's good to stall them as much as possible.
Best way to keep dinosaurs in- keep them happy with big enough enclosures with enough forest/grassland for their comfort bar.
