How is this game better then operation genesis?
Initially was super excited but the reviews and steam comments paint an abysmal picture and i can only conclude most of those who left positive reviews never played genesis or are impressed by the most superficial cosmetic stuff.
I couldn't care less about palette swapped dinos and "cinematic" animations, what matters to me is gameplay and management.

So for those who HAVE played genesis, what gameplay aspects does this game do better if at all?

No x2 x6 button so its slow
Less messages when digsites, research and such are idle
No guest input, they're just walking around, no complaints whatsoever
Only a financial statement is given from time to time
Hardly any other information is given

When comparing the two games, I'd say that JWE does enclosure building and dinosaur management better, personally I like having to refill the feeders and manage their social needs to keep them comfortable. JPOG was very basic when it came to enclosures, give them food, water, and a rectangle and they're happy. Though JPOG was much, MUCH, harder in terms of money management and guest satisfaction compared to JWE. Spread out some food stands, have decent dino visibility, and give some gift/clothing shops, and easy 5 star guest satisfaction. No research for guest items like ATMs, Umbrellas, Rest Areas, etc. The guest management is abysmal compared to JPOG.

JPOG also had a "Challenge" mode where you have a random island and have to start from scratch and work your way up, every island in JWE has set buildings and enclosures (empty) that it starts with, you can delete and reworks these but that takes time and money (which you should have an abundance of with little difficulty). The Sandbox mode on Isla Sorna also has unlimited cash, so no JPOG style campaign (though I believe they said they hear our desire for it and are going to work on it, I'll have to find a source)

The Dinosaurs themselves behave less naturally compared to JPOG though, mainly due to the forced in battle system (I personally think it was a waste of time and energy, but others like it). There's no packs of raptors taking down a larger herbivore, you actually can't have ANY carnivores mixed with Herbivores because there's no "Hunt" stat for carnivores, if their hunger drops below 100% (so 99%) they'll immediately find an Herbivore to kill for food if they're in the enclosure. If there's no Herbivores, they'll casually kill goats or go to the carnivore feeder.

Overall, I think JWE was well worth the money spent, I played 5 hours straight last night and didn't even notice I had been playing that long. I do think the game needs some work on the park management aspect though, it's too simple and could have a lot more depth, especially on the guest side of the fence.

Just bought it. Me and my sister each had a copy of JPOG when we were kids and I loved it. I also have faith in Frontier as a developer(and I hate almost all developers these days), they have been very good at continuing to add contect to their games, so even if (hanve't tried it yet) it might feel like some stuff is missing today, I'm sure it will be rectified.

I like this game alot. Its alot easier in terms of park management but harder in terms of dinosaur happiness, which I enjoy the challenge of.

I played 19 hours straight since im on vacation.... heh

Although I enjoy the game, this game is not as good as Operation Genesis. The graphics and esthetics are absolutely gorgeous and this game has been designed with alot of visual detail in mind. That ofcourse, brings a dreading lack of management. Guests just walk around, sometimes pointing at dinosaurs, but they do not complain, give feedback etc. When it comes to building out your park, it's quite simple. No garbage bins, no benches, no small stands and shops.

A MASSIVE lack of space to build everything, so you really have to stuff every gap, leaving out thought out beautiful, creative designs. You have to utilize every bit of space. The terraforming is bugged/not worked out properly, since there's always the message you can't place it due to terrain issues.

The dinosaurs do not feel as actual dinosaurs. They do not move around in groups or hunt together.

Making the enclosures is done fast aswell. I could waste hours into making the perfect enclosures for my dinosaurs in OG. Here it's just ram a fence down, throw down some grass, water and tree's and your done. No selection of what tree's, grass and so on. There's always a description of "These dinosaurs lived in arid environments" etc etc, but you can't do anything with that, due to lack of customising the park YOU want to have.

Like I said, I enjoy the game and it's small challenges, but so much more could be improved and expanded upon. Frontier had the exact same thing happen with Planet Coaster and they fleshed the game completely out within a year with free content, so I am hoping this will happen with Evolution aswell.

I would love to see Avian dinosaurs and nautical dinosaurs!

its not. genisis has features that make it look like a sequel to evolution. ie dino packs.... randomly generated sandbox mode without unlimited money and everything unlocked for mass replayability..... more impressive security. shoot to kill for dangerous dinos AND lethal gene incase of break outs. more in depth micro management of dinos and park guests.. i could go on

I think the major problem is that Frontier probably underestimated how much we really just wanted an updated JPOG, not a whole new park builder. JWE is a great foundation for future development though.

Feels the same to me. Which is a good thing. I loved JPOG. This just feels like a modern version of it really.

Its not JPOG. Its not trying to be JPOG. Stop comparing.

its trying to be a more inovative version of JPOG and falls flat on its face. they should most definitly be compared as they are in the same catagory. dont get upset because people are saying bad things. nothing will change if the bad is not pointed out.

Some interesting response, so it seems JWE does do a few things better such as dino mental health, but overall it seems my pessimism was justified.
Feels more flash over substance and the management aspect just isn't meaty enough for someone like me, big big shame.

A couple of you mention the devs are solid so i can only hope in future updates they work on making visitors much more interesting and work on the management aspect in general.
I guess I'll hold off and check back in a few updates to see if the game is going in that direction before writing it off completely.

To me this screams of messed up priorities. So no hunting or pack behavior but they bothered with that? Just...wow. Kinda says it all in regards to flash over substance imo.

Both are dinosaur theme park simulators with the jurassic park license so a comparison is very apt, or would you prefer i compare it to OTHER zoo type theme park games? Because the comparison will be even less kind :P

Anyways my question is more or less answered but feel free to keep on debating.

It's not. I would say the biggest reason is the devs deliberately made the map space limited and built the game around that. I could forgive the lighter management aspects. It's a lot harder to swallow both not been allowed any real creativity AND lighter management. I don't get to build the park I want, I build the park dictated by the map to a restraining degree. Space dominates your every decision. The sandbox may be different but since you can only use dinosaurs and buildings first I haven't gone to it yet.

The strangest thing is I don't think it would take much to get this to the level or better than Genesis. Pack behaviour, bigger maps, more amenities, garbage, restrooms etc should be pretty easy to add. To the extent I really don't know why they didn't. Considering Planet Coaster more customisation is well within their abilities. Yet they chose not to.

It's what feels so frustrating about the game to me none of the limitations, restricitions or "missing" stuff seem to be down to technical problems or lack of talent, they all seem to be design choices.

if it started trying to be JPOG it might actually be better than jpog in some fashion other than graphics.
BobbySopor Jun 13, 2018 @ 2:47pm
this game is 4gb big, same size as genesis, they are 15 years apart.
just kidding, genesis was 700mb but i think you get the point. and... right now the price of operation genesis on amazon in europe is 199,99 euro. i think in 3 months the price of jurassic world evolution will be around 19,99 euro xD
