I think Dennis Nedry probably wasn't that knowledgable about the dinosaurs in the park, and he probably meant other 'bigger' dinosaur species when he said it (although it would have been more interesting if it had been true).
In the novel he didn't even knew what kind of species to expect when he went to the park together with the others to fix bugs in the computer systems. In the novel the Dilophosaurus (whom didn't had a frill but did spit venom) was the same size of the real animal, which is around 7 meters (23 ft) in lenght. A pretty big animal compared to the nerfed version of the movies. It was one of the earliest big theropod dinosaurs.
The way it offed Nedry is one of the more gruesome kills in the novel. You almost feel sorry for the poor sod.
I don't really remember Nedry's death from the books. The way Hammond went was more memorable to me cuz he was more of a d*ck in the books. Breaking his legs and being eaten by Compies felt quite rightous.
Yeah. He had it comming the piece of XXXX who only cared about making money and nothing else. He was not a nice grandpa, that's for sure. Totally different compared to the movie version.
Well in the book there was a Dilo that was much larger then the one in the movies
The T-Rex is the big threat and the raptors are also a considerable threat. The dilo was just in one scene and making it larger than a raptor or approx size Hollywood believed would cause confusion.
It's a hollywood, dumbing things down situation. Say you have 2 characters in a film and one wears a red shirt and sandals. Character #2 will not wear something similar, but different, say, blue shirt and boots so they are more identifiable.
Just plain ol hollywood. The same way Gennaro was a snivelling whimp in the film, but in the book he is quite fit. Grant and Ellie in the book, colleagues of different ages, in the film, lovers. Cuz hollywood needs a love interest.
Since the movie has been popular all dilos are now portrayed in other games (ARK) as being quite small, just not true. Also the frills...that's hollywood. The spitting, was Crichton trying to jazz the dinosaur up. Same with the carnos and their camo skin in the second book.
Everthing else is artistic freedom, either from writer, producer, gamedeveloper. No archeologist in the bunch i fear
