You have to get Isla Matanceros to 4-Stars to unlock Isla Nublar, the sandbox island.

Keep in mind there is a sandbox island, but not a sandbox mode.
You will be able to go to Isla Nublar at any time after hitting 4 stars on Isla Matanceros, but you will only have the things available to you that you have unlocked already. If you want some tech or dino that you do't have yet you will need to go get it through normal campaign play, then it will be available to you on Isla Nublar

I am stuck at that island with too little space to build up anything much and probably will never make it to the sandbox island I am afraid. D:

How? You can make 4* with just the starting paddock and a paddock along side that one? That's like half the available space

If you have spread out to the point that you have no room left then no, you will probably not hit 4 stars on that island in its present incarnation. It sounds like it grew too fast. Keep it compact and pay attention to the ratings and add what you are lacking according to that.

Put out some high rating dinos and you'll have it unlocked in no time.

At the point the OP seems to be in the game, what constitutes a high rating dino anyway? Since they mentioned not having any room left to build I am guessing their Transport rating is one thing holding them back. Unless he is coming back to Matanceros, he doesn't have the monorail yet

@Graham - Look in the park ratings and see where you are scoring low and improve those areas and your rating will come up

You can get 5* rating with the animals on the first island if you don't overexpend the park.

The easiest way to get at least a 4 star rating is by following each of the main mission, research each available research item, get and breed each of the available dinosaurs and release them on the island, build at least one hotel, all the available shops, and if you have enough money also get the innovation center (but that building is optional). Make sure everything has enough power by building 1 or 2 extra powerstations (you don't need electric fencing for this island, so just stick with normal fences for now). Make sure each building is connected to a path that is also connected to the entrance of the park.

When I did that in my first playthrough I got a 5 star rating without even trying. Just make sure to follow the (main) missions and slowly build and increase your park. Don't expand to quickly just as Jaded and ThruuLottleDats mentioned and take your time.

And if you ever need some advice, just let me know, Graham. I'm always happy to help :)

The starter paddock zone is to large you want to split it into 3. Pump out 3 Ceratosaurus and put in 1/3 of it. The 2nd 3rd has Triceratop Struthiomimus and Edmontosaurus.
Then just dump a hotel, and 2 food shopping and fun buildings down for guests and you should have 4 stars.

Heres some tips. If you're having space issues with enclosures small to medium dinos are fine in a shared 3x3 pen with liked dinos. They require a lot less space than you'd think. Small carnivores can be placed with medium carnivores or armored herbivores with minimal issues. Despite saying they're liked by carnivores, Compsognathus will be hunted down by other carnivores of all sizes, so place them with herbivores. While large carnivores can be placed with armored and large herbivores there is still a good probability of them being hunted down, but if you place some small herbivores in there too the carnivores will focus on hunting the easier target most of the time. The Irex and Indoraptor are best left alone, they will kill everything.
