How do I close the gap between map edge and fence post?
Is there a trick to this?

They can't go over the map edge, but they can escape by running alongside the map edge. Especially if you don't even make a complete enclosure. The map edge cannot be used as a natural fence

When I place a fence post as close to the map edge as I can, my Dinos are able to squeeze through the gap between the post and the edge

Ok you cant link the fence to the map edge but....... You can find an area put a fence around the map edge leaving gap. Put down a mono rail inside fence, link it to entrance put down another building say ranger station next to mono rail link it. then delete path link to entrance and just use mono rail to inside fence . Is that what your looking for ? there a pic on my steam.

Just put a fence along the map edge? What's the problem here?

My animals keep getting out despite the fact that I put the fence post as close to the edge as possible

Do you actually make a complete enclosure or do you leave open gaps? You should never leave gaps even if the enclosure goes along the map edge.

If they get angry they will always break the fence, they don't care if its by the map edge or anywhere else.

^^ this

One time I fenced in the guest area and let the dinosaurs roam free outside that area. When a dinosaur was rampaging (even when it was not contained within any kind of enclosure) it still went to the fenced off visitor area and broke the fencing. Dinosaurs are programmed to seek out a fence and smash it, even if the animal itself is not fenced in.
