Well, these VNs all made with the target audience in mind. It’s like insulting “Twilight” for having all the elements that appeal to teenage girls. When you create a product you need to identify your target audience and pander to it as SHAMELESSLY as you can. If you don’t like it, it’s probably just not intended for you.
I am tired of the school setting so VN like “Making Lovers”, where protagonist is an adult dating adult women is right up my alley. Making Lovers also has great H-scenes which flow naturally so it is also an example of good writing in regards to sex scenes, which made downloading and installing a free 18+ patch from the NekoNyan website totally worth it.
I also like interesting and unique VNs like a classic horror masterpiece “Song of Saya”, messed up stuff like “Euphoria” and “Maggot Baits” or before mentioned wholesome “Katawa Shoujo”.
I mean, they're never necessary, but that doesn't matter. What matters is if it works. And clearly they do.
