You sounds just like those who only do Big Land HC because you just can't turn in normal tracks.
Drift system sucks, deal with it. Any huge change in scoring system probably never gonna come, at least it is not important anyway.
At this stage of the game's life, I believe I can truthfully say that Drifting in the game will remain as is. You can deal with it or whine incessantly and probably get dragged for it by others on this board.
There are drift tracks I have a lot of problems on, but I don't blame the tracks (though I think having debris in the road, like when someone else knocked a pole over, being hit counting as end of chain is silly.) It's simply that I don't really enjoy drifting so I mostly only do so when forced, like in a Summit.
Go to LA Airport. You have a huge area in which to practice. Focus on gaining skills there. Plenty of room so you shouldn't run into issues and there's rarely anyone else there.
As Ham said, tuning is important. Check out the tuning spreadsheet the community has online via Google Office in a read only format. Try those players' tunes and see what works for you.
Also, try to get comfortable drifting initially by using one of the easy vehicles. That RUF is decent and not too many Bucks. I also love that little Nissan, but forget the name of it. It's tiny but has a mean little enging.
Finally, you might want to try using manual gears. Third gear is the sweet spot for drifting. Get into 3rd and just leave it.
You might want to search these forums. There have been some seriously good and informative posts on Drifting. I know Joridiculous has written extensively over the years on the topic. Heck, Jori was the one to tell me to just stick to third gear.
Practice. Get your basics down first.
Then do that easy drift event, it's the second one on the list. Tons of room and a forgiving course. Once you can get through the whole thing on one chain move on to another event.
TL;DR Practice, read up on drifting in this game, and practice even more. Then start with the second event under Drift and stick with it until you perfect it; one chain the whole way from start to finish.
*So don't want to read all of that? In simplest terms, drifting mechanics and scoring will never be changed so, "Git Gud, Bruh."
