I am new to the Dead Effect series but it seems like the main differences are the storyline alterations (there appears to be a fair amount of both text and spoken dialogue that refers to the character by name, which is much appreciated flavor/differentiation).
The gameplay differences appear to be pretty much just in terms of the starting weapons and the limit on picking a loadout of 2 abilities -- the generic abilities muddy the waters a bit because you might or might not prefer to swap out the class abilities with the generic ones, like the time slow, etc.
Someone more knowledgeable in the Dead Effect games, please correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps there are other differentiators, such as stats, weapon bonuses or gear restrictions?
there are some minor differences during the story, but it's now mostly cosmetic effect (and of course when the multiplayer gets public it will decide what others will see).
So pick based on your aestethic/roleplay preference.
As for the weapon types - weapon training ranks require a lot of kills to get so it might be a good idea to stick to your preferred weapon.
(and maxing the weapon training will unlock access to quests for the ultimate weapon, although that's not currently available since it requires maxed character)
If that's something too major to change in Dead Effect 2, I hope that the design of restricting capabilities by class can at least be reconsidered for future titles.
