There's conan unconquered, I've not played it but looks very similar. I like the whole conan universe but its an odd choice for this type of game to be sure, anything with Conan would normally be hitting things with a big sword! Looks quite pretty though.

There's "Conan Unconquered" which looks similar to TAB ( havent played it ) and also there is "Age Of Darkness: Final Stand" coming in a few weeks, which is also like TAB but set in a grim fanatsy world.

Just saw this: "Alien Marauder", a SciFi-Version of TAB. Looks pretty cool so far, maybe it is. EA is coming soon, open Beta is up.

It's still in development unfortunately so expect issues. There is some base defending but it's more on the aggressive side.

For some reason I immediatily thought of Kenshi, but that's something entirely different :-)

Sweet game though

Factorio is comparable but completely sandbox, and not a game where you can pause/build at the same time. You have crash landed on an alien planet and must gather resources like coal, rock, and wood plus others to make your base. Periodically, some aliens will attack your base; especially as you grow outward. You control a humanoid that runs around crafting items and buildings. Your avatar can shoot and ride around in vehicles once you make them. The only point to the vanilla game is to eventually build a giant rocket which i presume you could escape the planet from but you have to use your imagination for that because you simply get a victory screen and the option to keep playing and your avatar is still on the planet.

I recommend Kenshi as well. Another sandbox game where survival and exploration seem like the only option as there is no narrator. Start as one unit and recruit others to build a small army. You can build a town, defend it from cannibals/other factions. The map is slightly less than 1000 sq. kilometers and after 200 hours of game time I have barely scratched the surface of exploring it. Crossbows and swords +dismemberment are included. You can get knocked unconscious and lose limbs very easily so i suppose patience is a big part of the game. There are towns to buy and sell from but i found it more appealing to mine minerals and sell them and buy provisions that can make my town self sustainable and only adventured to find new towns to buy upgrade armor and weapons from. Imagination makes this game fun over the game telling you that you've achieved something. It is a 0 achievement game so you gotta make up your own story.

Good luck with your search. I love TAB but find myself looking for games close to it/different because TAB is a great game but it feels incomplete with all the glitches and lack of fully fleshed story.

Age of Darkness looks very promising! I'll definitely be taking a closer look once it's out on Octover 7th. Hopefully the gameplay is better than Conan which I felt was a bit meh and never really took off.

in overall, look for games in the Command & Conquer franchise. Most of the older ones have modded maps titled "AoD" - art of defense, which is basically a mode modded map // mission. In general you're playing an actual RTS andwhile you can build a bigass base, the premise is that you (like cepheus protocol and i think starcraft) build an army to completely wipe out the opposing side.

Best C&C game is Generals and all of you who think otherwise are dead wrong

I haven't played There Are Billions so I can't recommend a game just like it since I don't know exactly what the gameplay is but Rise to Ruins is a fun tower defense type game where you a build bases and have to defend against increasingly large incoming waves of enemies. During the day you deal with repair, exploration, and construction and at night waves of enemies attack and you have to defend your settlement.

Another strong tower defense game where you alternate between building defensive structures and defending against enemy phases is Dungeon Defenders. That is much more of a hybrid with first/third person action game as you can take your character's sword and run around and attack enemies as well as building defensive towers.

Both of these games have some way that units that can attack the enemy, but generally they focus on stationary towers where I think They Are Billions focuses more on using mobile units to defend your base.

Keep in mind age of darkness is super early access, so if you are expecting it to be as good full of content as TAB, it won’t be for a bit
