it does have "some" save system. It basically autosaves every couple minutes and if you finish/fail a mission.
You can make backup saves on the campaign map, but if you ever load them and continue playing from them they will get overwritten by the autosave.

Hello,

You have several different ways to save your progress, the autosave just helps you in case the game breaks. You can save every time you complete a mission or map and also you have a back up system in the campaign mode for you to save in the map campaign screen after each mission.

Or alternatively, you savescum by backing up the autosave files after every wave during a survival game :)

It's an absolutely horrid excuse for an RTS and is far too demanding considering it's single player. The campaign is half baked and the all or nothing difficulty means even the slightest of mistakes or draw backs and you might as well start over. You will not beat the game (few have), and you will spend most of your time on one or two challenges before quitting.

85% of the reviews (on STEAM) don't think in the same way but there is always a place for divergent opinions.

Its very worth the purchase, although the campaign itself is not the main draw (and easily the part of the game I found more disappointing). The survival "sandbox" mode however is easily one of the most addicting strategy modes I've ever played. This game created its own sub genre it was so good. I'd pick it up!

I bought and refunded this game in 2017 and 2020. Both times I disliked the UI, didn't want to learn what was what, and absolutely hated the idea of being timed. But I bought it again a few days ago and I am 57 hours in, likely going to have close to 200 when I done with it.

This game is not for you if you do not want to take time to learn the game. It is also not for you if you dislike the possibility of having 1+ hour of your time go in the trash because you made a tiny mistake that cascades into a total loss. I personally had time this week to just learn the game. After figuring out space management and learned what my priorities are, the game became way better than I had originally thought the first two times I bought it.

This is strictly campaign talk. I'm saving the sandbox mode for when I beat the campaign so I can get a better understanding of all the units and buildings. But I can already tell I'm going to really like it. Personally I would say get the game and just say goodbye to the refund. You won't learn the game in the 2 hour window. The game becomes significantly better with experience.

15% is still a significant number, and the fact that he’s put almost 100 hours into the game makes his comment highly valid, regardless of the overall Steam reviews. Everyones experience is different, and his perspective deserves just as much consideration.

I'm pretty sure that's not true since I use backups a lot. I like to be able to replay the Attack missions and making a backup is the only way to do that. I've done that quite a few times and never noticed my saves getting overwritten.

It's the finest RTS game I've ever played. I have 1200+ hours and counting, all without any mods. Well worth any price for me. The Survival mode has infinite replayability due to the random generation of the maps, and there is a lot of replayability in the campaign to better your score once you know what you're doing.

The two biggest drawbacks are one: Steep learning curve with little information given to the player. During the campaign (that must be won before you get the Survival Mode) you must pick technologies based upon nothing but a name. You don't know what most of the units and buildings do until you can play around and unlock them all in the Survival Mode.

Combine that with issue two: Ironman mode, no saves. You can't reload knowing what you no now during a mission or the campaign. Leads to some "if only I had known that's how THIS tech works, I wouldn't have taken it!"

It's my go-to for I want a challenge but also don't want to have to think too hard. I crank it up to 900% difficulty and get annihilated. I've survived to the last wave three times now and it's glorious.

i also just saw your save comment. You can save and exit at any time to play later. It's just autosaving, as you can't reload past saves, etc. You only get one file, mistakes and all.

And to add: If you screwed up something, then saved, reloading it is usually not going to save your run even if they did have multiple saves. So I view it as a time saver.
