You can make backup saves on the campaign map, but if you ever load them and continue playing from them they will get overwritten by the autosave.
You have several different ways to save your progress, the autosave just helps you in case the game breaks. You can save every time you complete a mission or map and also you have a back up system in the campaign mode for you to save in the map campaign screen after each mission.

85% of the reviews (on STEAM) don't think in the same way but there is always a place for divergent opinions.

Its very worth the purchase, although the campaign itself is not the main draw (and easily the part of the game I found more disappointing). The survival "sandbox" mode however is easily one of the most addicting strategy modes I've ever played. This game created its own sub genre it was so good. I'd pick it up!
This game is not for you if you do not want to take time to learn the game. It is also not for you if you dislike the possibility of having 1+ hour of your time go in the trash because you made a tiny mistake that cascades into a total loss. I personally had time this week to just learn the game. After figuring out space management and learned what my priorities are, the game became way better than I had originally thought the first two times I bought it.
This is strictly campaign talk. I'm saving the sandbox mode for when I beat the campaign so I can get a better understanding of all the units and buildings. But I can already tell I'm going to really like it. Personally I would say get the game and just say goodbye to the refund. You won't learn the game in the 2 hour window. The game becomes significantly better with experience.
15% is still a significant number, and the fact that he’s put almost 100 hours into the game makes his comment highly valid, regardless of the overall Steam reviews. Everyones experience is different, and his perspective deserves just as much consideration.
The two biggest drawbacks are one: Steep learning curve with little information given to the player. During the campaign (that must be won before you get the Survival Mode) you must pick technologies based upon nothing but a name. You don't know what most of the units and buildings do until you can play around and unlock them all in the Survival Mode.
Combine that with issue two: Ironman mode, no saves. You can't reload knowing what you no now during a mission or the campaign. Leads to some "if only I had known that's how THIS tech works, I wouldn't have taken it!"
It's my go-to for I want a challenge but also don't want to have to think too hard. I crank it up to 900% difficulty and get annihilated. I've survived to the last wave three times now and it's glorious.
And to add: If you screwed up something, then saved, reloading it is usually not going to save your run even if they did have multiple saves. So I view it as a time saver.
