Snipers generally get great at defending waves once they reach Vet due to the increased ATK Speed. A sufficiently large mass of Vet Snipers wipes entire sections of zombies from miles away.
Ultimately, in Survival, most units are pretty good and viable except on 800%. So use what you think is best. (I prefer Marines + Sniper balls) Campaign is similar but, again, Marines just get busted if you focus on them.
If you're playing survival and you're unsure which to go with, start with a soldier screen and then fill in snipers behind them. If you have to run, the soldiers will actually push the snipers ahead so they get away faster.
Think of soldiers as tanks and snipers as artillery. Artillery, used correctly, is far more powerful. But you have to protect them.
Soldiers in survival are more cost effective againts 45hp runners and 35hp shamblers than snipers.
20 soldiers can likely kill more than 20 snipers before being overwhelmed.
In case of overwhelm soldiers last and kill much more snipers fall fast and also recover hp much slower.
BUT if you can get to around a sniper ball of 70 you can clear most maps on nightmare without micro exluding big vods and giants.
Maybe 40-50 sniper is enough on default pop to clear easily.
70 soldier will likely unable to fire all at once due to much less range and lose a few unmicroed on same map same settings.
Having mix of snipers and soldiers usually clears faster, cheaper but needs much more micro.
Having a few soldiers just to tank for the sniper ball can be worth it.Or few rangers to micro kite zeds to prevent overwhelm.Or to tank a giant hit.
The bigger the numbers the better snipers become due to their high fire range so all of them can fire at once.
200 towered snipers are way way better than 200 towered survival soldier where most can not even fire the frontlines.
Campaign fully upped soldiers with 144hp and 65% armor have around 411 effective hitpoint and regen 6hp per out of combat and have more range(important when massed 50+).
Kills everything in less hits than in survival, fully upgraded veteran one can 1 hit kill shamblers........In campaign runner types are much more common, special are much less common.
Survival has 120hp and 40% armor so 200 effective hp.
Mild upgraded campaign soldier has 60% armor 120hp so 300 effective hp and likely 20% more dmg and 1 more range......
Snipers shots like the ballista tower also deals knockback so in practice is slows down the movement speed of the special zombies.
Againt a harpy a soldier does 40 dps which kills it in 3sec, harpy does 90dps,after armor reduction it's 32 DPS. killing the soldier in 4.5sec.
they get xp fast, a group of 15-20 vet soldiers can hold any chokepoint againt a pretty large horde, kill all specials without getting close, the snipers only use is in towers against big last waves killing specials, especially giants and mutants.
