Put this in an area where you can build a houses on all sides, so not hugging a mountain or coast. Put these in the center of a big area of unfarmable land.
Try to stick with as low tier of housing as possible until you have no room and need to upgrade. This is until you have both the market and bank up, in which case upgrade everything in the AOE.
Housing can be build in two rows touching each other which generally makes for the easist base planning. But don't have long continuous rows or it will severely restrict army movement.
I'm not the best at maximizing econ, but I've beaten all 4 maps with that general strategy. Some people here are able to turn the game into Sim City and print money, but it depends on alot of factors especially tileset.
You can only build 3 markets but infinite banks. Banks are really expensive so you usually won't have more banks than markets. Markets cut food cost massively.
Warehouses are also incredibly useful and those take up ALOT of space. I think 6x6. It can be difficult to fit one at your spawn since you are usually using it for housing, but when expanding, always think about where to put the warehouse. Build as many warehouses as possible once you have the resources. It's not an early-game thing.
And the AOE's don't stack. I heard they once did, but not anymore.
Combined market+bank give +30% gold -30%food need for all houses.

You can fit 100houses on a 22*25 square, light green is the zone where you benefit from both bonuses ( market and bank )
One thing I've found that helps a LOT with housing is to wall off separate housing blocks as I progress forward. I've had multiple instances of containment breaches that I survived thanks to having walls to keep the infected from houses trapped *in* an area where I could pick them off, rather than having the domino chain go all the way to my command center immediately.
