Building Walls Zig-Zag or Diagonally?

Are there any reason not to build diagonally? You can use less wall pieces, but I see most people building in a zig-zag pattern.

Most people build several -layers- of walls. Initially you want to just wall off your base, but shortly thereafter you want 2-3 layers of walls along any spot you think is going to be repeatedly attacked, plus automated defenses. I think the latter is what you're probably seeing.
