Mods, Editing Save Games, and Creating Game Maps
IMPORTANT: Any alteration of game files, de-compiling the game or creating external applications to edit maps or save games are not allowed in any case. Any reference to those tools will be banned from the forum. Indeed, that's a copyright infringement.
Why?
Easy. The game is under development, it is an Early Access game that is changing every day. External tools to hack the game or the game files negatively affect the development. These generate errors and crashes that are sent to Numantian Games via the Error Reporting System. Even worse, some hackers are unlocking and publishing content that it is in development that has not yet been published by the developers. Also, those tools are intended to cheat the game which will be a big problem for our new game feature the Community Challenge.
For that reason, we modified a lot of the game code to prevent the hacking applications. A lot of development time wasted just to avoid those problems.
Thanks
Regards.
You can copy the save folder so they are not overwritten (from documents folder).
If you die or want to go back ("load a game") you just exit to menu, restore the save folder and press "continue". It will now reload from that previous state.
You can discussed wether or not ironmode should be forced or not (and it's being fought ALL over these forums) but this is how you load/save at the moment. I prefer to play with this options, some don't.
No external tool needed. No hack.
so not sure why he's reposting the FAQ.. obviously we need to be able to continue to backup save games if we're going to send them to you for bugs.. at least while we're in EA
In menu you can save and quit a Game. This is on of 2 options to save a Game. The other is autosave. The Survival Mode is an Ironman Mode, you have only 1 chance to win...
This is how I played the game since the beginning and I really really like the game (like this). One of my favorites in past years.
The routine to make a backup of your current map is very easy. You start map, save&exit, go to save folder backup desired savefile to a different folder, go back to game and continue. You can go as far as to make backup after every wave if you want. You just have to do it yourself, that's it.
The devs said they will never implement it themselves, because they want players to endure ironman no matter what and Gomez also just copy pastes the FAQ instead of explaining how you can do it yourself. This is NOT about modyifying the game via savefile editing, this is about circumventing the ironman mode for people who don't enjoy it. He is probably not allowed to reveal any savegame related tricks.
Man I hope you come back on that on a later point. You're basically saying no mods allowed. A game like this could thrive so much more with mod support, and if the only remaining reason for this is the community challenge, i'd go as far as saying that's an extremely bad reason. It's a single player game first and foremost. Any online functionality such as a leaderboard is nice, but has NOTHING on mod support. It's like choosing a can of pre-war spam over a freshly smoked ham. Or a single piece of candy instead of the whole pinata. A stale loaf of bread rather than... Eh.. I think you're getting it.
Edit: To make it clear, I hope you come back on this after the full release, considering the primary reasons are no longer valid by then.
Kinda helps if you read links lol. Devs plan on adding Workshop/Mod support once they release the game. They also want to make a Modding Tool for people so it is easier to Mod the game or at least make custom maps and whatnot.
