Exploding Barrels

I feel a bit dumb having to ask this but...how the heck do you order your soldiers to shoot them? I've tried right-clicking on them, Attacking them, pretty much every combination of 'Hey you with the gun, target that barrel' but I just can't get them to blow up. I can move them and place them, but I can't seem to actually *use* them.

Q for attack command then left click the barrel.

I tried that, repeatedly, but they only moved to attack the area. Or attacked whatever zombie was nearest it if there was a group coming in that I was trying to blow up. Is there some trick to it? Or is it just finicky and I've been unlucky?

just attack command, it's just tricky if zombies are already on top of it

That seems rather dull and beats the purpose of the explosive barrel tbh "if zombies are already close". I think there should be a way to tell any of your units to specifically fire at the closest barrel "if there's any around"

Current state won't let you utilize them well enough

Edit - ONLY works when zombies are absolutely nowhere near it, so it's pointless to even have this 'feature.' Targeting worked in the 90s with starcraft but these guys can't figure it out?

Use your sniper. He can carry the barrel anywhere you want then blow it up.
