That is not true at all. I watched someone on Twitch earlier today beat it on Nightmare using only Ballistae, Soldiers and Snipers. He also is not experienced with the game at all. He only bought it when the campaign came out and is just figuring it out as he goes along.
He had around 60 snipers, 80 soldiers and 30 Ballistae and wooden walls. He also had no towers to put his snipers and soldiers inside. Instead he made a continuous retreat as they broke down the front walls, and kept building up new layers at the back.
Re did the campaign and invested my tech more wisely. Rushed to stone walls and shock towers. They didnt even break the first row of walls...
The tech choice is hugely influencial honestly.
Not saying it's impossible with only wood walls and soldiers. But it's going to be way harder.
I really see early techs as a huge trap seriously. Yeah sure you got that 20% food on hunters, an extra soldier at the beggining and some 200gold per train.
Compare that to stone walls and shock towers... not even close.
That only applies to Nightmare which is fairly common in all RTS games at the highest difficulty. You typically need to use the most efficient tech path to get things that make other missions significantly easier.
200 Soldiers & 24 Ballista's. I would have made more Soldiers but I drained the map of food pretty thoroughly.
Shame you cannot see stats after a mission cos' I'm sure the soldiers did all the work there.
Here, passed it at 100% difficulty with around 260 soldiers, gradual retreat and wood workshop only. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1779207653
Ballistas proved to be unefficient.
On the other side, tighter defences would force me to abandon soldiers at the front.
Never lost a single unit.
I just chilled and watched all those zombs burn to ashes. =D
Played on challenging difficulty. The game could have sent a constant flow of zombies all over the bridge for an hour and it wouldn't have made a difference.
