I really wish they added manual saves. It would be less frustrating, and not artifically lengthen the campaign.
EDIT: If you close the game normally you can force a save manually and then backup this.
If by "hardcore" you mean unnecessarily frustrating because it lacks features that other games in the genre have, then sure. :)
This is not complex to do, it's a game feature.
Regards
It's not a feature people want on easier difficulties.
Simply save&exit, navigate to "..\Documents\My Games\They Are Billions\Saves" then just copy paste the saves (.zxsav /.zxcheck) you need into another folder. This process take a few seconds and even PC novices can do it. You just have to do it yourself, that's all. To load the backup, copy paste them back into the save folder and delete the _backup files, since the game always loads them first and you might think it's not working. Even XCOM 2 ironman can be savescummed the same way, if you are feeling extra cheap.
I had a bad colony mission go south when some zombie snuck in and started to overrun my colony. Against all odds I barely managed to keep my command centre alive, despite the literal entire rest of my colony of 200 people being overrun. I clawed back and reconquerd my colony and won the mission.
Had it not been for this psudo ironman mode, I'd have quit the mission when I was overrun and try again.
