The list goes on. People are very creative and fill the gaps in the playability spectrum between super casual and super hardcore, along with the spectrum of base game optimization to total conversion mods (looking at you 40k). Its tons of free content that keeps the game relevant, keeps people playing and wanting more, and once modding is set up, its fairly low maintence i'd think.
From cursory looks it seems that modding was looked down on for several reasons, but its honestly a good low effort, high return option to keep a game live and hot. I wonder what the draw between leaderboarding vs mods would be in terms of retention, playerbase expansion, and enjoyment. I honestly don't know, but if thats holding back modding support, my vote is for mods, people will gimmick leaderboards regardless.
It's not possible though...
It's just the way the game engine was designed etc, that type of play would of required then to plan it into the design from the start.
I would imagine though with how popular this game was and with the amount of requests made for multiplayer that they are billions 2, or what ever IP they make next, will continue a multiplayer mode😁
They would be foolish to not deliver on something that clearly such a large part of their audience wants.
I think No Man's Sky has kind of ruled out the need for it to have been designed from the start. Looking back, despite their side-stepping and choice of words, it's now super apparent that they never intended for the game to be cooperative (at one point, the developer even says how it would be virtually impossible for two people to be in the same spot at the same time).
Therefore, I'd say co-op in They Are Billions is definitely possible to implement. It'd just be an immense overhaul with zero guarantee for a payout, given how long the game has been out at this point - meaning it almost assuredly wouldn't be worth it.
As Developers said some times ago, the game is finished, not dead. We keep working.
Thanks
I'm not asking that as a fanboy of the game, but the game is very interesting and I like the development signatures that the team has, so I would be interested to see some new work given their experience.
I really think game have a lot of disadvantages. But game have enough content. Week Challenges, Survival as addition to Campaign. 7 units is enough for my army. Techs\buildings\wonders is enough.
I dont refuse any DLC\(or free updates_) with new content. But game is completed as is. And there is nothing to worry about devs. They can make LoX2\TAB2 or been on vacations for last some month (if have enough money from both game). They will come anyway, at any time. LoX2 already announced, so it possible. TAB2... maybe. There is some ideas that Gomez read here and tell to other devs. If they got new idea what it can be - TAB2 - they do it for sure.
I dont think we need that for now. If you still need just few more content - game Workshop. So new game should be completely new. I dont think devs get idea for that entirely new game. We should wait. Dont rush them.
Even for indie devs can be silent for years and then bring new game. Im sure they do some blog updates to the end of the year. Maybe we will know they plans. Until that you can play two games. Alreay tired of them? Go to some others indie\like indie games, there is a lot of them (look at Daedalic publisher).
I would like to remember that we are a very very small studio. Now we are making improvements for TAB in the new generation consoles (PS5 and Xbox X) but we keep working studying and developing new and original ideas for our next projects. But the most important thing is that we are active and working every day.
Regards.
