Any way to save Mortimer?

Noticed that after the patch Mortimer dies post-Celeste fight, whereas before nothing was really going on with him on your third return to Gideon's Rock.

Just got to that point too and noticed, and was wondering, the same thing. He didn't have any new dialogue options, so this leaves me curious. Maybe if you don't give him coin he doesn't move?

Are there any other changes to NPCs? like does the gateway bravo doctor acknowledge the nanite infestation in the second half of the game? I always found it weird how she kept repeating the same dialogue about the sick patients even while the apocalypse was going on around her.

His death is actually related to the "Metamorphosis" quest, as the audiologs you collect suggest that the creature you stalk in killed him.
