I am not quite sure which button you push... :)
And you can always go back to the Elf girl to unlock new skills. I also never really relied on the whole super gem stuff, except once you have the 'cure' ability for the super gem and the girls start to throw negative effects at you. But in most cases its more beneficial to upgrade the normal skill gems to get the effect out of those.
Super Gems are nice, but without the rage to boost your base damage, they won´t hit hard enough.
