How to put the tomato down??? (Tutorial)

So I just started the game, and the tutorial.
First I noticed when I hit CTRL to crouch, the CTRL outline turns green, but I don't seem to change height. Well, not important for now.
The big problem is, I want to buy this tomato, and the dood tells me to already put it down on the counter. So I hit SHIFT for advanced controls, then hold LMB and drag down the mouse so the tomato lands exactly below the arrow point on the table. However, I cannot seem to let go of it. So I keep picking it up again as soon as I let go of SHIFT, as it continues to stick to my hand. Help!
Why is there no explanation how to let it go? I can't believe the very first and simplest thing doesn't work, lol.
I was pretty hyped starting the game and after 2 minutes have to click exit game already, sad D:

You can put tomato by simple clicking onto countertop. If that doesn't work either, check if you have enabled context control mode (General tab in settings)

Doesn't work. I cannot drop the tomato, no matter what I try. Clicking does nothing. I tried all mouse buttons, checked configs, unchecked that option you mentioned, even tried to hit ENTER key with my nose just because there was nothing else left to try, while having to hold SHIFT and LMB at the same time so my avatar wouldnt let go of the tomato..
Also, should I be able to crouch? Just saying, as when I pressed CTRL to just test crouching the "CTRL" icon would light up but my character wouldn't go into crouching mode or anything, just stayed exactly as before.

Ok let's try asking here again.
What is supposed to be displayed on the screen?
I pick tomato with LMB as is indicated.
I go to the table.
Now it shows "SHIFT - advanced" so I press and hold shift and it shows LMB=move vertically.
So while holding SHIFT I also hold LMB and drag the mouse down so the tomato gets pulled towards the table surface.
However, there is no indicator at all showing how to GET RID AND DROP the freaking tomato now. So:
When it's firmly on the surface under the green arrow point I try to..
1) LMB click - nothing happens
2) Let go of shift - tomato snaps back into midair
in both cases I'm still holding the tomato.
Seriously, this is the most ridiculous encounter I had with any game ever, wtf???

As a side note, as I already said previously, I tried to crouch just for fun in between, and while the CTRL icon lights up, my character doesn't crouch or do anything at all, so maybe this is intended that you cannot crouch during this first tutorial and the "CTRL crouch" icon there is just a bug/oversight, or the game controls are just totally bugged in general?

If I understand you correctly, you're talking about Cooking School mode.
Crouching also doesn't work in my game, so it's probably intentionally disabled.

About your problem, you shouldn't need to use "Advanced Control" (Shift) in this mode (there is no button for dropping products, which is in Career mode). You just need to click onto countertop without using shift. I've recorded short video, in which I showing what you should do to pass tutorial. https://youtu.be/EdxAN5ZE_4c

If this doesn't help either, that might be problem with your game.

Oh wow, thanks. awesome that you made a video for that!!
And it helped, because I see a bug: In my game the small white arrow that you had and that showed to drop it, did NOT show up! So something is broken. I will try to reinstall I guess, but since this is just a fresh install with default config, I have a feeling it's not gonna help lol.

EDIT: It works! Solution wasn't to reinstall though, but to set compat tool forced to Proton 5, now the small white arrow will show up and I can drop it, whooo!

EDIT2: That was NOT the solution. Instead it's even simpler:
If you hold the mouse cursor not relatively tilted towards the floor, then you will just never see the white arrow and the whole drop-tomato-target. So solution is, look at the floor while going towards the table, to ensure the arrow will pop up.
I'm used to playing 3d shooters so I don't look down usually, so I just aimed straight at the top of the table and that would the white marker cause to never show up and being unable to actually drop it despite standing right in front of the table and green arrow.
