Same. Tooltip says pressing CTRL will 'unlock' the targeting, but it's never worked for me.
Settings -> Controls -> "Mouse Settings" -> AOE Spells snap to nearest target
I tried changing it and it seems to do nothing I could see.
There does not seem to be a place in the "Settings -> Controls" to map the hot key CTRL to AOE unlock. Maybe that is just supposed to be fixed (non-configurable)? Or they forgot that setting as well?
Some other aoes have to be targeted at a monster (even when it says target a POINT).
It does seem like it is intended for those flasks/bombs like you mentionned.
If this is intended, they should change tooltips to properly explain.
If its not intended, then they should allow us to target the ground since the mechanic is already in the game on other spells (like fireball for example).
It feels like there should be a lot more available "ground targeting" and not require you to target the actual monster. What I find funny is how you can get precision throwing or whatever it is called and your alchemist can throw bombs at will and the AOE will never hurt your team.
Anyhow, would love to see them fix or update throwing specifically and go through the list of targetted spells to see if "target a point" actually means just that.
I did try the left Cntrl button both holding it down and toggle style neither worked...….
any help would be appreciated.
