Tristian Romance Bugged (on older saves). Devs please look into this!
Yeah I know I've made this topic a few times but this is annoying me.

In a recent patch, it stated that Tristian's romance was fixed, as long as you go back to a point in your game from before you complete Betrayer's Flight.

It seems to work for some people as I've read on the forums, but not for me and it's driving me absolutely insane.

Now, I've reloaded 3 different saves and gone through all the Betrayer's Flight etc and seen nothing except for the Varnhold Vanishing dialog (but this requires going back to a save from before Vordakai's Tomb, NOT from before you finish Betrayer's Flight.)

-First save : right after clearing the war at Glenebron (or whatever it's called). cleared Betrayer's Flight second. did not get anything new (including the Varnhold Vanishing dialog obviously, since he was already gone at this point)

-Second save : right before Vordakai's Tomb; I chose "I don't care. We can overcome anything together" during the breakup scene

Saved Tristian first, yet no new romance option, no pre-coronation dialogue

-Third save : right before Tristian's first major romance dialogue (Nights in Katapesh) during Season of the Bloom. played all the way through this and Varnhold Vanishing and chose "We'll do as you say, but you're breaking my heart" - also held his hand when he was worried about the raven, which should have given me some romance points but I think it did not.

Saved Tristian first again, no new romance option, no pre-coronation dialogue.

Checking the statistics.json file, it looks like my romance points are stuck at 60 no matter what I do, and it seems like I need 65 to progress and trigger romance option during end of Betrayer's Flight.

It seems like some saves (or entire characters) are just completely messed up in regards to Tristian's romance. I know the devs stated that if you reload a save from before "Betrayer's Flight" you'd be fine, but that does NOT seem to be the case for some people (like me.)

My last attempt will be going back to the beginning of Varnhold Vanishing--again--and choosing the "We can overcome anything together" choice and doing the ENTIRE CHAPTER again, picking the right choices again, etc etc... and if this doesn't work, I can say without a doubt that some people are just entirely out of luck when it comes to Tristian romance and need to make a completely new character -- unless devs can fix whatever is causing this.

Dear devs, do I need to start a completely new game if I want to romance Tristian and see all the new dialogue? Please look into this.

If you would like me to send these 3 save files, I definitely will, if it can help at all. Just would love some kind of response instead of being in the dark.

Sorry if I come off as mean or angry, I'm really just frustrated and sad because I really love the game and this character and I want to see it all play out properly without having to replay things a billion times. *sadface*

You know what they say... the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome!

Thank you. Hope this will be fixed soon. I love the game and Tristian, so please help me see it through to the end!

Hello! Could you please post a link to your save file here so we can check?

Some spoilers: For successful romance, you need to do Betrayer's Flight before visiting the barbarians. Otherwise, neither it nor Tristian's personal quests won't progress. You also need 'Kingdom of the Cleansed' quest completed.

The 60 -> 65 transition happens right at the end of Betrayer's Flight if you did everything right and followed Tristian first, before going to barbarians. If you get "[Hold Tristian] "Let me take you home." dialog option in the very last dialog with him in the Abandoned Keep - that means that everything is going well.

Yes hun I did Betrayer's Flight first and I do have Kingdom of the Cleansed completed.

Here are two saves right before rescuing him and the "Hold Tristian" option does not appear in either one.

I tried it with both options during the break-up "You're breaking my heart" (1st save) and "We can overcome anything together" (2nd save) Both saves have done Kingdom of the Cleansed and are en-route to completing Betrayer's Flight before the barbarians.

Also pardon me, I was using a few cheats (cheat engine) in these saves since I went back 20-30 hours to older saves (after the patch stated Tristian romance was bugged) and even re-did all of Season of the Bloom and Varnhold Vanishing (the first save) because I thought I missed something and I wanted to do it as quickly as possible!

Thank you so so much for your reply, I really really appreciate it! I hope you can help me discover what's wrong. Thank you again, really, I am so grateful for your reply!

Thank you!
We'll check the saves, but I don't know how long it will take us to find the problem. The good news - I don't think you'll need to restart the game, in most cases we can fix those things and allow you to continue playing normally.

Btw, don't you remember, was the task "Follow Tristian through the Bloom" completed or failed for you? I saw some reports stating that sometimes some parts of "Betrayer's flight" quest get marked as failed even if they are done. It might be the thing that not allows you to progress with romance.
Sorayai Oct 20, 2018 @ 10:21am
Thank you so much! I'm really glad I won't have to restart from the beginning! I will wait patiently for a fix. I'm so grateful for your help, it means so much to me that you guys care. I'm really patient (and tenacious LOL) when it comes to something I really love and want, so I don't mind if it takes you guys some time to fix.

Just the fact that you took the time to reach out to me and help me when I was going crazy with this problem is enough to give me some peace and a lot of faith in you guys. :)

I'm not sure if it was marked as failed. Let me go and check...

Yes, "Follow Tristian Through the Bloom" -- it was marked as failed.

Weird...

EDIT: Please let me know if you'd like me to provide any other saves (such as right before I go after him at Candlemere). I want to help as much as I can!

@Fasolka

Someone brought to my attention that the Varnhold Vanishing dialogue that appears is indeed what is bugging out Tristian's romance. I went back to an older save from before the patch that "fixed Tristian's romance" -- where I did not have this dialogue (the breakup dialogue) and the romance option appeared when doing Betrayer's Flight first.

Very strange! So basically anyone who starts the game with the newest patch will auto-fail Tristian's romance due to the dialogue that pops up at the beginning of the Varnhold Vanishing chapter!

EDIT: Also, even when continuing his romance at this point, it still marked "Follow Tristian Through the Bloom" as failed.

I managed to get Tristian's romance to progress past Betrayer's Flight on a save where the Varnhold Vanishing dialogue (the one where he says he's distracted you too much) didn't happen. However, I then couldn't get Saving Grace to happen and Amiri's reforging of her sword quest doesn't appear either. (I guess cos you fail her other one by not doing Hour of Rage first.)

Losing Amiri's companion quests and having Tristian's companion quest become bugged in order to romance him feels pretty unfair (and out of character for Tristian to not want you to deal with the war first), and out of step with the other romances that don't require similar losses. I hope the devs might reconsider that particular choice - at least allow us to still complete Amiri's next quest and making Saving Grace doable when you romance Tristian.

I'm still having issues with this version, I own the GOG version of the game and I have tried starting the game over SIX times now from beginning all the way to betrayers flight.

Each time I vet the Varnhold discussion in camp I have tried both conversation options ad gone forward. I get some romance text when we are searching Varnhold when a bird shows up, but I never got a

"Hold tristian" option in Betrayer's Flight. Not once. I tried reloading, I tried everything. My json is also stuck at 60, and never progresses.

Is there even romance text in the Vordekai tomb quest?

I'm havint he same thing. I got all the dialogues, finished the kingdom of the cleansed quest, got all the varnhodl dialogues, didn't get any special dialogues inside vordakai's tomb, then went straight to betrayers flight and got to him before doing the barabarians and I didnt get a "hold tristian" option either.

This is 100% borked. I've spent a good 40 hours now rerolling back repeatedly and trying every single option and none of them worked :D even though I met the dev's explanation requirements.... So yeah, it's definately not working.
Khat Oct 23, 2018 @ 4:19am
Would also like to add that "follow tristian through the bloom" repeatedly keeps markign as failed... even though I do everything as was said in this threat. This has to be soem sort of bug. Why would it mark as fail if you do exactly what it tells you to? XD

I had this dialogue, still no pre-coronation dialogue triggered. Can i fix triggering it manually by editing save? I've reloaded and replayed everything due to major game bugs, and really tired to do this even one more time because of this.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, male player gets to save everyone and the girl, where us- girls getting marked as a fool, people dying, and maybe, probably, in 50% cases, chance to continue romance? No discrimination at all... :\

I can confirm that. Started over 3 times got a thirst romance dialog triggered only once, all else being equal(

I'm pretty salty about this to be honest. It also bears the question if it's supposed to be like that? There's the Comrades-in-Arms achievement where you have to succeed in all available companion quests and you can't actually unlock that if the choice between Amiri/Tristian makes you lose one or the other. Unless the achievement carries through multiple playthroughs of course. I dunno, the whole thing is so incredibly disappointing.
Yeah the mod/dev's response seems to indicate that's intentional, but why would that be? You would think if anything following him first would make Tristian feel guilty and man in all his dialogues after does he feel guilty.

Not the OP, but...
TristianRomanceCounterValue is the one you'll want to look for.
(And maybe TristianRomanceUpperCutOff as well.)
(AND 'Follow Tristian through the Bloom' objective is FollowNigelThroughTheBloom.)

60 -> 65 transition never happened in my gameplay. Manually editing the player.json file made the said dialogue option pop up, but I'm not sure whether this will break some other thing.

Hello everyone!
We did few fixes to the romance that will go live with 1.0.14 hotfix on Monday. Tested them with the saves provided by Sorayai and everything worked fine, not only for the broken dialog in the Abandoned Keep but for the few further romance events as well. So I think (and really hope) that the bugs will be gone with 1.0.14 hotfix. In case you'll still have troubles with it - please report in this thread (with the link to the save file). I'm keeping eye on the thread.

For those who edited saves to get the '65' score - I did a quick test and it seems that it won't break anything. But I recommend to avoid manual editing in the future. These scores are not an actual scale, more like markings for us to track certain stages of the romance. The important thing are 'plot flags'. This bug was caused by one of the plot flags missing. So by editing the score without editing the flags you could create a situation that was not possible with the normal run of the game, and who knows what it could break :)

Thanks for your patience!

Wait...to further Tristians Companion Quest I have to do Betrayers Flight first, which would make Amiris Companion Quest Fail? Or is it "just" the romance?
