I can't get the candle stick to work to open the door. I've found I believe two other candle switches in the hall also but no obvious results

i can be wrong here but if i recall there was 5 candles - one just near secret entrance, two - in rooms south of secret entrance, and two in others rooms in west side of palace

You need the lute, chalice and statue of Irovetti and Nyrissa in each of them. Then you must answer the question of who am I. Answer with Mandalarucio Bellander from Hajoth Hakados.

This was bugged so I trying pulling each piece in to the chest with a different character and it work the compartment opens under the painting 6k gold and gloves of +10 arcana and world and +4 dispel DC.

There is a lute, "vulgar statuette" and a chalice around Palace, you put each of them into chests in certain order(which you can trial and error easily) and then you can talk to the golem.
