It's basically the same thing as killing them.
There will be an option to kill him then at the end of his segment.
Also, Jaethal will kill Tristian herself in act 6 if you fully complete her quest chain but not his. Which is pretty hilarious :)
Answer is yes. Ive killed Tristian myself, even though it meant I was missing one advisor the whole game.
I cant remember the names of the quests, but if you choose to keep the Oculus of Abaddon which is an evil item and a reward from some quest, Tristian will eventually steal it and you have to confront him. You get an opportunity to kill him to get the item.
EDIT: I think its a quest chain that starts from investigating the vanishing of Varnhold, and will eventually lead to a huge dungeon in Tors of Levenies where you will find the Oculus.
