The "B" key is for entering Blakemoor's Hideout, which on the region map is found within the "Middle of Nowhere" location.
I then opened the door with a trickery check.
Ahhh. I got there before I went to Pitax, and didn't need a key to enter (skill checks for the win).
So that takes care of *that* key. Thanks.
Which still leaves some doubt as to the function of the Gilded Key.
Actually, are there *any* doors in this game that absolutely require a key, and don't have a Trickery check ?
I seem to recall a number of doors that needed keys rather than Trickery checks. Including all the way back to the troll fortress in ch. 2.
I also found Blakemoor's Hideout before going into Pitax City. It seemed strange that I could make a diplomacy check to convince him to give me a book someone else had commissioned him to produce, but I decided to try it and got the book, then turned it in to Captain Martyn when I eventually met him. I wondered why I never got the achievement for getting the grimoire, then found out I had broken the quest (though I was still able to complete it in the journal). Apparently I totally missed a tough boss fight. I see what Blakemoor meant about it not being ready, though. Misspelling your own name in the title of your book is downright embarrassing. *Blackemoor's Grimore* indeed!
I finished the game without ever finding a use for the gilded key.
Edit: will give more detail after work, that one is a doozy.
I have no clue how you're supposed to guess that these objects are involved in an enigma, beyond meta gaming.

Ok; so I won't worry about it.
That fight is hidden behind a 40 DC Arcane check! I don't think there is another way to get it.
Or do you get the fight if you come back after one week ?
(edit: sadly I can only mark one post as THE answer; though each part of my question was answered in a different post...)
I did return to Blakemoor's hideout after taking down Irovetti, but he was just hanging out, as he had been when I first met him. I've read something about going to his hideout after getting the quest The Impatient Pirates of Pitax, so I thought the boss fight would happen if things were done in the correct order? I just did a quick search but am not finding more details right away. Does the DC 40 Arcana check happen when you go to see him after getting the quest from the pirates? Will you know if you fail it, or is it hidden like Vordakai's Arcana check? I'm asking so I can try to get all this right on my next playthrough. ;-)
I did just discover that the book you get for doing the quest right is a *different book* that summons a movanic deva. The one I got summoned a "furious squirrels swarm." I subsequently found its twin in Irovetti's palace.
I also apparently messed up the Blakemoor quest, b/c I got the stupid squirrel swarm book and don't remember a chance to face off against the wizard.
I looted everything and the golden golem did not mind...
Will provide more detail on Blakemoore tomorrow.
Cool, thank you!
Did you ever use the grimoire? I meant to but forgot about it. I've been wondering what a swarm of furious squirrels would look like in the game. :D
