That whole upgrade was a complete disaster. They rolled it out where I work, now wine (all Windows apps, even 64-bit), won't work, and the change to zsh from bash broke a bunch of scripts. But this is far from the first time Apple has done this (remember USB ports...?). Apple doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ about backward compatibility, and it shows.

Apple made a deliberate decision to stop 32-bit apps from working in Catalina. This has affected many thousands of apps including PK1 and the only "fix" is for Owlcat to divert enough programmer time away from PK2 to re-code PK1 as 64-bit. Depending on exactly how PK1 was coded, this could take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of months. Most companies won't bother to update older apps as sales are too low to justify the expense, unfortunately. Anyone know if Owlcat has commented on this?
Yes, that was completely insane from Apple. Why would you ever get rid of an old architecture, after the current one (64 bit) has been around since the mid 2000s? This game was released in 2018. How hard can it be to develop for 64 bits from the start?

They ironically probably intentionally coded for 32 bit to reach the widest compatible audience while maintaining only one version, since it used to be that 32 bit users couldn't run 64 bit software but 64 bit users could run both.

And yes, it is 100% insane to get rid of something most of your users still use. Even as someone who installs 64-bit software when given the option, the vast majority of programs on my PC are still 32-bit, including most of my games, especially since I both like retro games and have a preference to keep using software that already works for me. And I know my buddies who use Macs have been kvetching about losing half their software library from the change.

I have found that many MAC games such as Pathfinder Kingmaker who have been listed as 32 bit by STEAM, indicating that they would not run under the new CATALINA OS, are in fact able to do so. The first time you launch them under this os, they take a little bit longer but then run quite well. A few very old ones won't, such as Wizardry 6 and 7. But in those cases, I have made a virtual launch system with the previous Mohave OS that I can returned to on starting my MAC by holding the OPTION key. So all is well with my MAC gaming world!
Btw I am currently assembling a list of games working on Catalina despite (wrongly) being marked as 32 bit:

If you haven't ♥♥♥♥♥♥ everything up, it should take about 10 minutes to do a recompile for 64 bit and then a ♥♥♥♥ ton of testing afterwards, unless you've done your testing right, in which case it should take about 20 minutes. So, days = you're ♥♥♥♥, months = you really have no clue about what you're doing. Yes, this is what I do to get food on the table.
Apple is doing the right thing here and they gave *plenty* of warning to people, including owlcat, who should have dealt with this more than a year ago. Only Microsoft hasn't understood that you sometimes need to dump old ♥♥♥♥ and Windows is the only major operating system that still has a 32 bit option; everybody else has defaulted to 64 for about a decade and 32 bit has been a minor platform for most of the same time period. Modern linux distros don't even offer an official 32 bit option anymore.
Just install some linux distro if you want your stuff to work.
@Jormundgand I completely agree with you. Yet, as it turns out, this game in particular is really 64 bits and it is just wrongly declared in Steam.

This may be what you do for a living, but you have no understanding who and how software is used- from fortune 500 companies to your aunt Trudy.

That's not really relevant. I was commenting on how software development works. How that software is being used is hardly relevant, from a pure software development perspective. You can use it wrong all you want -- as long as my code does what it's supposed to do, I really can't be bothered. Good automated tests and well designed code, gives me the confidence I need to be satisfied with my work.
This is getting kind of off topic, so I'll leave it at that. Feel free to leave a comment -- I won't reply.

On Steam it says that it is 64 bit ... then you try to play and it is not compatible with McOS Catalina. It is a major Stem mistake! What do we who have paid and cannot play ???
