Not exactly. They have different heritages, but they're based on different species of celestials (some with close ties to fire, I'll grant you). Unless the wiki is just... lying to me.
I'm talking about geniekin -- Sylphs, Undines, Ifrits, and Oreads. Races whose heritage stem from the Inner Planes, with bloodlines imbued with the four classical elements. (I wholly acknowledge that I may be getting a little too into this.)
An Ifrit worshiper of Sarenrae, spreading hope, forgiveness, and -- when those fail -- cleansing fire throughout the Stag Lord's stronghold.
An Oread Druid, with stronger ties than most to the Stolen Lands, a stabilizing force amidst the chaos of the weakened boundaries between worlds.
An Undine Monk, weaving like a current through legions of skeletal undead as he crushes their spines to a fine powder.
A Sylph Magus, their mastery over swordplay and the arcane matching them against trolls with no defenses against her biting evocations.
I know that, mechanically, the choice of race is rather superficial. I get that. You pick it mostly for the initial racial bonus boost, and it doesn't come up much in dialogue.
But I can't stop thinking about possibilities like the stories above, and I just don't get that spark quite as often from the core races, for one reason or another.
Right? I'd really like to experience those possibilities.
I personally wouldn't be, but would wholly respect those who did.
I mention the Elemental races mostly because they and the Aasimar vote were separated by a really tiny fraction, and because I personally love more options that come with four entirely new races.
I might agree with you if this were just an original isometric adventure, but this game has its roots firmly in a tabletop system that I personally adore. I never thought I'd get to see a video game based on Pathfinder, but here we are. And even if it's in small, arbitrary ways, I like to let my imagination run wild as a result.
And frankly, to the statement of "race doesn't matter in the game at all anyway", I probably wouldn't say "so why bother?"
Sounds like that deserves an answer more akin to "so if this were to happen, I'd like to see your race have more of an effect in dialogue, or more spell-like abilities."
I know I would.
