Ha, yeah, if I must I will, but if there is a way in game I will attempt that first. I do miss the way Icewind dale handled it, though it was built more for combat than story.

Np. You should be able to get a full party at that point. I had 2500 selling a bunch of crap so it should be doable.
But bear in mind they'll be one level behind at first, which is a bit ass but less relevant later.
Also if you take the purse in the intro, you end up with less money. The advantage here is you get to have the priest right away (if you take the purse but otherwise are good. I did not try letting the people die in the fire, but leaving the purse, that may allow you to get the priest as well.
Scaling/exp etc, I think is based on your highest level character, but you can fix this by just not leveling up your main until your new hires can level as well. You still get exp for your main, and by level 4 they should all be the same level (your main will just level to 5 faster, then 6 faster etc.
