Weapon finesse allows you to use dexterity to hit, not to damage, you need a separate feat, item enchantment or rogue spec for dex to damage.

You need Finesse Training to add your Dex as damage. You get that later.

as pointed out your damage bouns is based off STR until you get feats to make it do otherwise.

what feat would you recommend?

i went scion with the goal of adding cleric for frontline healing, then maybe either going mystic or Dragon Disciple

It's a rogue ability to add Dex to damage called Finesse Training.

damn that means i'd have to add rogue to my kit... =/ blargh maybe i should just reroll out of dex

finese training adds dex to damage at level 3 for rogues.

other then that u can pick up slashing/fencing grace. however it requires 1hand style with empty offhand. meaninging no dw, shield, 2handomg etc

also monks got amulet that lets u use dex as damage

besides those melee weapons will always us strength for damage

There are three ways to add Dex damage to a weapon in this game:
  1. Find a weapon with the Agile enchantment
  2. Get the Slashing Grace or Finesse Grace feats (you'll need Weapon Focus in the weapon you're using and Weapon Finesse as prerequisites). The feats work with slashing and piercing weapons respectively.
  3. Take a Rogue class with Finesse Training as a class feature to level 3.

yea i might just have to reroll then, i figured dex would help me hit things, i rerolled because it took like 10 minutes to kill a dryad in the hills by my kingdom that was raiding, i just couldn't hit her at all, the second dryad that had rock dog elementals not the first.

Dex does help you hit things in the right context.

Ranged weapons like bows? yup Dex helps you hit things.
Melee unless feats give it to you otherwise? Str

Weapon Finesse with light weapons for example can give you your Dex to hit.

Practically, you almost need 3 rogue levels for STR to DEX melee damage conversion if you doesn't want to have other hand empty. Clerics usually go STR way and don heavy armor.
